Meet Travis Platt and Ryan Kirk of CYTIES in DTLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Platt and Ryan Kirk.

It started over a cold beer, poured by Travis while he helmed the bar during a happy hour shift, ordered by Ryan, who walked in as a brand new resident to LA fresh from Texas. A friendship began as stories were traded and an idea was born. Since then, many beers have been shared and toasted in different cities around our nation in the name of CYTIES.

As avid travelers, we searched for something like CYTIES. When we couldn’t find it, we decided to create it. What seemed like a steep feat, we hit the road to uncover the true gems through different cities in America that feature cocktails, coffee, style, and boutique hotels, thus giving birth to the idea of travel guides that capture the soul of the places we feature—built for the modern jet setter.

CYTIES is completely bootstrapped by us (Travis & Ryan). Early on, we decided against VC or Investors, which created no limitations to our creative vision for the platform. Because of this, our brand has been able to build a solid bond with our audience as it has continued to grow organically.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any great idea, it begins with the decision to try. Because we decided to stay a small team and remain independent, financially, we’ve had to grow accordingly. Every single feature highlighted on CYTIES is one we have laced up our weathered boots and “Hit the Concrete” to find.

When we first created the foundations of our idea, it involved a lot of travel and dedication. We were basically working our weekly jobs, then traveling on our own dime every weekend to a new city to cover.

We started CYTIES believing there was something missing in the constant stream of travel information on today’s web. To cover the amount of content in CYTIES.com features, it has taken work around the clock and a constant ambition to move the line forward.

Please tell us about CYTIES.
CYTIES is a travel publication for thrill-seekers, explorers, and wild roamers who live to uncover the best a diverse city has to offer. We aim to bring purpose back to travel and discovery. Within our platform, we also offer topic advice, sit down interviews, and daily features on our Gear Grid.

We are known for our unique content on Bars, Coffee, Style, and Boutique Hotels. What sets us apart? We are determined to break the shackles of overused and exhausted publication approaches, CYTIES brings features to life through creative articles, stunning visuals, and interactive maps — igniting a trail of discovery for jet-setters exploring the greatest cities in America and beyond. Our passion for Los Angeles was a massive spark to getting our mission off the ground.

We are beyond excited to announce that the CYTIES App is in the works and coming soon! Although we can’t reveal all the details quite yet, we can tell you it will serve as a travel tool for urban-exploring, design-forward, well-traveled men and women.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Travis: I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, so lacing up my boots and navigating misty, forested trails around my house with my Border Collie Buddy is something I often return to for inspiration and can see clearly when looking back. My back yard landscape seemed so big and wonderous. I try to take that level of curiosity with me each day in the city and wherever I go.

Ryan: I have a big close family. During Christmas, my mom’s side of the family would all come over to spend the night. Waking up to the smell of my dad making Pancakes, believing in Santa, and the hope of getting and giving presents. I remember unwrapping my first black leather jacket. I wanted to be like Fonzie from Happy Days. Oh, the mind of a child. I still have a leather jacket…
