Meet Trailblazer Vanessa Broin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Broin.

Vanessa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a teenager, I always had a love for makeup. I remember the day my mom took me to a MAC masterclass… you watch the pro artists work on models, learn tips and then buy a product. After that, I was hooked! I would practice makeup on myself and friends, flash forward to today and I’ve been working as a professional makeup artist for about 15 years now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has been a challenge learning how to grow my business over the years, a lot of trial and error. I would recommend for anyone starting out to see if they can work at a salon or makeup counter first. That way they will have the opportunity to learn, gain some clients and have a steady income until they are ready to start their own business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bee Pretty – what should we know?
I work on a variety of jobs from commercial work, to events and weddings. I’d say I’m best known for creating beautiful natural looks that enhance a woman’s beauty and allows her to feel comfortable in her own skin. That being said, Halloween is my favorite time of year! I love the opportunity to step away from the norm and paint on some fantasy makeup.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think many women feel that they need to prove their worth and gain respect in a male-dominated society. Luckily, I don’t have too many problems in my field since the majority of makeup artists are typically women.
