Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Barajas.
Vanessa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m originally from Northern California but moved to LA mid-2016 for a fresh start. I was coming about a bad relationship and was looking for a new beginning in the city of angels. I definitely found it! I’ve always worked in the food industry, so I started there, but as you can imagine, the love for fashion and the LA lifestyle soon grew on me. I transitioned into retail working at Bloomingdales, and while I was already putting out weekly content on Instagram, in January of this year, I dove right into the blogosphere. I started my own website and began putting out daily content, which let me tell ya, it wasn’t easy! Along the way, I’ve watched hundreds of YouTube videos on growing as an Influencer, bought many courses, and overall, just began creating a community through daily engagement and interaction with my followers. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Though I’ve experienced many “ups” – working with brands like Dior, Neutrogena, Lulus – I’ve also experienced the challenges of starting your own business. Beyond learning how to create a website, curating hundreds of outfits, daily photoshoots (which includes scouting locations), and daily content online, there were also internal struggles I had to overcome: fear of failure, shyness while shooting in public, the intimidation of being a small fish in a big pond (LA has no shortage of influencers). It wasn’t until I simply started that I overcame these fears. I had to go out and shoot – my best outfit with my best poses and framing – to overcome being shy. And most importantly, I had to connect with like-minded boss babes who were chasing their dream with me. Having a community of humble but powerful women by my side has turned my intimidation into confidence, and I’m more hopeful and optimistic toward the future than I’ve ever been.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
By title, I’m a fashion blogger! I specialize in fashion and trends and focus on uploading daily content and collaborating with brands that share my tastes and love of life. I’m most proud of the community of women that have surrounded me along my journey. They are worth more to me than 1,000 collaborations! And what sets me apart is my optimism and genuine approach to influencing and blogging. I don’t want to just share my best moments with you, I want to take you on the journey with me. I love sharing the small moments along with the big ones, and I love spreading a message of gratitude and hope.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
My favorite books are The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior, and Capture Your Style by Aimee Song. My favorite podcasts would have to be The Influencer Podcast by Julie Solomon and the GaryVee Audio Experience by Gary Vee. Blogs I follow? Where do I start! Sincerely Jules, Aimee Song, Brittany Xavier, Paola Alberdi, Sazan Hendrix… to name a few! These women inspired me to start blogging in the first place and still inspire me on the daily with ideas. Other than that, I value my faith and would definitely have to say the Bible is my go-to for inspiration and those daily “resets” we all need.
