Today we’d like to introduce you to Tesha Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tesha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I can remember being old enough to walk, I remember carrying a little purse, lace socks and loving everything girly and fashionable. My love for fashion and being able to make clothing that is affordably transitioned into a business 2 years ago. I started off turning simple rock band T-shirts into distressed, bleached and vintage pieces. After receiving multiple inquiries and compliments, I turned my hobby into a business. I soon gained momentum by working endlessly on my craft. Even working on orders at my 9 to 5 job, working through lunch breaks and any other free time I had.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a business owner has been far from easy. The road was filled with struggles and many times when I thought I would not be able to take my business to the next level. The most challenging struggle that I have faced is the fact that I play multiple roles in my business. I am the designer, photographer, customer service representative, shipping and receiving agent, marketing, and accounting and I even model from time to time. Since I own a small business that is fairly new, I haven’t hired a team or staff yet. However, the advantage of being so heavily involved in all aspects is that I am able to learn so much about the various aspects of my business.
My advice to other young female entrepreneurs is to learn the importance of balance, consistency, and organization. I’ve learned the power of a good to do list and making sure I prioritize my time. My advice is also to network as much as possible to forge mutually beneficial relationships that you can learn from others with more experience as well as attend events where you can promote your brand.
We’d love to hear more about Lux Liv Boutique.
I love what I do. I specialize in grunge and distressed t-shirts and custom made jackets. However, I have a luxury line which has a larger focus on more feminine and classic styles such as dresses, outerwear, and jumpsuits. My business is known for taking a simple T-shirt and bleaching and distressing it to turn into something completely different. I am most proud of being featured in three articles for custom jackets I made and designed for two twins, child actresses named Anais and Mirabelle that also have a huge following on Instagram. I am also most proud of being able to organize, host and fund my own Pop Up Shop and Art gallery event that I had at Art Share LA in October 2017. What sets my brand apart from others is the diversity of the clothing and the affordable price point. I make plus sized shirts that go all the way up to size 2XL, kids T-shirts, and men’s T-shirts. Therefore, when you shop with me, you can shop for your entire family and still spend less than 100$.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I am inspired by other female entrepreneurs and business women in the same field as me. I admire Rihanna a lot for her ability to constantly add different notches to her belt. She is so multifaceted that she is able to have a successful makeup line, clothing line, shoe line and now a lingerie company. I’m inspired by her consistent need to branch off into different avenues and to effectively execute all of them. I also find inspiration from many female Instagram boutique owners such as the Intertwine Collection owners, Kloset Envy’s owner Jai Nice and other’s such as Mina Monroe and Ms. Bling Miami. I admire their ability to use a social media platform such as Instagram to convert lookers into buyers.
