Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Simms Hendrix, Matthew and Boo Simms.
Sarah, Matthew, and Boo, please share your story with us.
Two sisters and their brother walk into a bar the week before New Year’s Eve. We had a couple beers and shared our goals for the upcoming year. By the time we left, we had doodled a big dream on a small napkin. And not long after that, we committed all of our waking hours to making that dream come true. A whole lot of heart following and soul spilling, an idea utterly soaked in love and here we are Lady & Larder. We are 100% family-owned and operated. We are siblings. We are best friends. And we grew up in the kitchen.
We are all a part of the hospitality community. It’s all we’ve ever known. It’s in our blood. Over the years, we’ve worked in restaurants, helped open restaurants, consulted with culinary teams, trained teams worked with small joints and big corporations – you name it. Through La Femme Epicure, we’ve had the honor of working with some incredible clients. We have cooked all over the West Coast – in private homes and planes, in the middle of vineyards, in backyards, in big warehouses, under tents, up in the mountains and down by the sea. And what these experiences have given us, is a profound respect and sense of gratitude for the process of growing, preparing and cooking food for people we love. We grew up with the notion and still maintain that a dinner table is a sacred place and the only thing bigger than our love of food is our love of sharing it with others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve found that the most important thing is our perspective – the obstacles and challenges of starting a business are all part of the adventure. Our dad always tells us “the difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a few minutes”. Our advice for women who are just starting their journey would be to just dive in – go for it!
We’d love to hear more about Lady & Larder.
We provide the very best American made cheese and cured meats along with a selection of seasonal and locally made accouterments. Our goal is simple: Use the best stuff we can get our hands on. We have found that the finest ingredients come from small-batch producers and we, like you, know there are no substitutes for quality. We offer some incredible products and we are committed to doing them justice by curating the best possible combinations on our boards for you. Our goal is to make each of our cheese and meat makers proud; They are trusting us with their products and we are grateful for the chance to work with them. We believe in supporting a 100% domestic and sustainable food culture. One that will continue to thrive for future generations to come. We are grateful for this opportunity to support the artisan cheese and cured meat making resurgence here at home. These American farmers, craftsman, butchers and master cheesemakers are defined by an unparalleled quality, dedication, and commitment to their craft. This is what we want to celebrate with our boards and share with you, by making these products readily available for you to enjoy.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
We are always drawn to people with authentic energy and passion for what they do and sometimes we end up networking in the most unexpected places or with people in industries much different from our own. These connections almost always open a door (or two!) and create new and exciting opportunities. Remember that networking can happen anywhere – not just at events or via the usual networking apps and social media channels.
