Meet Trailblazer Sandra Kourah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Kourah.

Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography is not something I do, being a photographer is who I am. As a child, my father (an engineer with a love of photography himself) handed me a camera as a way to document what I was feeling as we left our home in Ohio, and traveled to places far for his job. So, you can say that instilled in me the awe of raw, authentic, soulful, emotion and storytelling, both visually and via the written word. For as long as I can remember, I have always been accompanied with a camera of some sort, pen, and paper. Documenting tools that were among my most precious possessions growing up living all over the world. From a very young age, I was acutely aware of the beauty of the world around me and the ability I had to find a smile in whatever circumstance, country, or situation I found myself in and along the way they yearn to capture and document it all whether through writing or photography. What I captured and wrote I wanted to share that with the world. This stayed with me throughout my life through dental school and practicing dentistry until the creative wanderlust soulful storytelling calling became too strong not to follow it. Switching careers, I decided to start my photography business and also pursue a degree in E-Marketing and Web Design.

I am deeply inspired by the people and places that have shaped me through raw experiences that opened up my soul in ways I am forever in gratitude for. I believe in each one of us lies dormant untapped possibilities; I believe in every choice we make we can choose to tap into our unlimited possibilities and to see the world as an unlimited source of brilliance. I believe in capturing the heart & soul of your story. I believe in the art of soulful and authentic storytelling. I believe in capturing the light in your soul and the love in your heart.

I am a visual storyteller and chaser of light… always the light. I am enamored by the way light changes and paints the beauty of this world. I am enamored with the power of light and the power of transformation it holds. Light to me is hope, faith, and a promise of what is yet to come. Light, as it dances and twirls creating different emotions within our souls. The light that beckons us to follow our wanderlust, be the light, be fearless, fall down, get back up and let the light in. I believe your soul is the endless source of Light.

This has been the “Why” of my creative journey… to capture that authentic raw soulful story and recently added helping creatives with overall branding and content strategy through soulful design.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been smooth; the struggle is REAL! However, the rewards, experiences, people, and places that this journey has exposed me to have been priceless. In fact, this year marks the ten-year anniversary of my photography business! It has been an exciting turning point in which I celebrated my journey of light, love and evolving and went through a major rebrand applying everything I have learned and experienced pouring it back into my soulful brand story.

I started out ten years ago doing fine art portrait which then with pressure and some major FOMO evolved into wedding photography , but after several years, some major burnout and taking a time out to reassess and do some soul searching, I have recently gone back to my roots of the very reason I picked up a camera at a very young age. And that is to capture authentic, soulful, life stories through editorial, personal branding, and lifestyle photography and also offer overall branding and content strategy through soulful design at “The Soulful Creative” as well as creating fine art landscape photography which is now “The Wanderlust Creative.”

My biggest piece of advice would be to listen to your soul… it knows the way. Find your “Why”. Listen to your story and tell it, be it. Be 100% elemental and authentic you. I made the mistake early on of not listening to what creative process makes my soul happy and started comparing myself to others and their successful wedding businesses instead of pursuing what my instinctual gut was telling me. Comparison is a killer of creativity and your souls light. Even though I loved it, was good at it, and it was an honor to capture such love and light on some of the most memorable occasions, it was not where I was my most authentic self. Capturing authentic documentary imagery, visual life stories, personal brand stories, traveling and capturing the raw beauty of our earth is truly what sets my soul on fire. Find what sets you SOUL ON FIRE and do that!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a California based fine art photographer focusing on branding, editorial assignments, and lifestyle photography via The Soulful Creative, and a fine art landscape photography via The Wanderlust Creative. Available for assignment photography in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and for travel assignments.

I am a storyteller, an artist and a curator of light and love through soulful visual storytelling. I am a lightworker and intuitive photographer working to bring forth your vision of your highest self and empowering beautiful souls to share their stories and creatives to connect with their clients and tribe. I believe in capturing authentic moments and sharing the soulful stories of people and places through honest imagery.

My work is a reflection of what inspires me most and so authentic stories, soulful light, and environmental portraits are a common thread when documenting your creative process or your soulful story.

This applies to my Fine Art Landscape Photography as well. I am a visual storyteller and chaser of light and the stories of our beautiful radiant planet.

My style of fine art landscape photography is surreal and contemplative visual storytelling, evoking a sense of light and meditative stillness. It is a visual story of the words that flow through me as I stand still, inhale, listen and feel the stories of nature, her magnificent light, and her gifts of beauty around me. Being in nature, experiencing the meditative quiet stillness that fills my soul as I create a photograph, is what I hope will evoke in the viewer as well, that light, that inner calm, and stillness that nature offers to us in all her glory.

All fine art landscape photographs are available for purchase in customizable sizes and mediums including Metal, UV Acrylic, and Framed Prints and during a consultation, a design plan is made to fit your personalized space.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
This one was a tough one for me because I am an ambivert. (Yes, it is a word) 😊I am an introvert by nature but I am also an extrovert once I get over the introvert part 😊It is hard to push myself and get out there but when you find your tribe and your people it gets easier. The trick is to find your souls calling and the rest will follow.

For me, I stumbled upon my mentor doing a google search on visual storytelling and poetry. I am both and wanted to find some inspiration for both. She is an amazing photographer yet also had beautiful poetry laced with her beautiful visual fine art photography and I reached out to her and I thank the universe constantly for her. In spite of her living miles away from me, she responded and has been a true light in my journey.

So, be afraid not to reach out, there are many kindred spirits willing to share their light and now years later, I do the same and share that light with clients and my tribe!
