Meet Trailblazer Ruby Varela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Varela.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to work in the beauty industry when I grew up. I remember I had those toy mannequin heads where I would practice doing hair and it wasn’t until I was 13 that I started playing with makeup. I decided to take on my dream career once I graduated from high school in 2014. Two months after graduating high school, I started cosmetology school and then I went ahead and took two makeup courses and till this day, I still continue to learn more and more because the learning never stops

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For me, it wasn’t easy when I got started with my journey for the simple fact that I didn’t get enough support as I wish I did. To many people, being a hairstylist or makeup artist isn’t much of a job compared to being a lawyer for example. But that didn’t stop me because I knew what I wanted and I wasn’t going to let anything get in my way or my dreams. And that’s something any women should keep in mind especially young women. Anyone can be successful. You just have to believe in yourself and never give up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glam Style By Ruby – what should we know?
I am a licensed cosmetologist as of 2016 and a certified makeup artist. I truly enjoy doing hairstyles and makeup. My job is to make my clients even more beautiful!!! That feeling of seeing your client so satisfied and feeling so pretty is just speechless and that’s why I love what I do. Once you sit in my chair, you become more than just a client because it’s my job to make sure you are going to be satisfied with the outcome and hopefully keep coming back.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
To me, my mentors are my instructors who have pushed me through and helped me out so much. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help and advice. The perfect mentor is the one who even after you’ve graduated still check up on you to see how’s it going to give you tips, etc.
