Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Sandler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a native Brit living in LA, I often get asked how I made my way to this sunny paradise? Put simply, it was my love for holistic healing, good food and traveling that brought me here. In my early years, I was a huge sugar junkie, despite growing up in a household where sweet treats were not the norm. Truth be told, I loved starchy, high carb, processed foods, but suffice it to say, they didn’t love me! I was hugely disconnected from my body and for as long as I can remember I had digestive issues and suffered from all the joyous symptoms that accompanied this… bloating gas, an upset stomach and later down the line, hormonal imbalance.
After regular visits to doctors and specialists over the years, my condition was eventually diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Even with this diagnosis, I was unable to get the answers to the root cause of my digestive issues, and as many of us do, I learned to live with the discomfort and misery. Upon returning from a trip to India with a severe case of food poisoning, I became so fed up with the worsening symptoms that I decided to take control of my health through a journey of self-discovery and healing. After countless hours of reading and researching everything I could get my hands on, I eliminated sugar, caffeine, processed foods and alcohol from my diet, I started following a diet made up of heavy plant-based foods, healthy fats, smart carbs and good quality animal products. This dietary change led me to realize that the real answers to my digestive ailments lay in a food as medicine approach, and I found refuge in whole foods and holistic practices. I discovered that true healing was possible through proper nourishment for my mind, body and soul. I spent the next few years working towards restoring my own health, repairing my gut and healing my hormones. I was fortunate enough to transform my own life through the power of nutrition and food, I found my passion in helping to educate and empower others to take control of their own health.
My path leads me to enroll in the founding Naturopathic University in the US (NUNM), where I earned my Masters of Science in Nutrition so that I could fulfill my purpose of helping others through my true loves: food and healing. Upon completing my degree, I launched my Holistic Nutrition Counseling business here in LA, where I’m now living with my incredible husband and rock, without whom none of this would be possible. I’m now working with a wonderful clientele of women who are on their own journeys to resolve the root cause of their health issues.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having struggled with my own health issues, I can definitely say that it has been a bumpy road. Although I did not realize this at the time, I believe that these struggles served a greater purpose and have enabled me to help support, empower and heal other women in their own journeys. It has taken a great deal of determination, perseverance and strength, my advice to young women starting their journey is to believe in themselves and to not be afraid to fail as failure is an inevitable part of success. We are unique beautiful beings and every chapter teaches us a new lesson. If at first, we don’t succeed, try, try again.
We’d love to hear more about Nourish Roots.
I’m a thoughtful and passionate holistic nutritionist dedicated to helping women live a healthier, more fulfilled life through incorporating nourishing, whole-foods practices to truly heal from the root cause. It is my love of people, the natural world around us and evidence-based practice, which informs the way that I work with my clients.
Historically, women’s health has been largely underrepresented in medical and health-related research. My mission is to help change the outdated conversation by empowering women and providing them with the tools, education and personal support they need to achieve results and feel their very best. I specialize in root cause, women’s health and recognize that there’s no one-size-fits-all diet as each person is unique with their own individual nutritional requirements. I treat the person, not just the disease or the condition. I believe that we are intended to live in harmony with nature and as in the case of plant life, our human roots must be nurtured and nourished in order for our stems and branches to flourish. It is through this belief that Nourish Roots was born.
Human beings are designed to be in a state of balance and yet all too often, we become disconnected from ourselves and our food, leaving us in a constant state of imbalance. Fortunately, the human body is both regenerative and innately wise so when given the right support, she will flourish.
My tailored approach to nutritional counseling is rooted in looking at my client individually as one complete system and examining how each area of their life influences and impacts their health. This allows me to address the unique, root cause of imbalance, facilitate the body’s natural healing mechanisms by nourishing the whole person and in turn, creating positive changes and healthy habits that have lasting effects.
I’ve learned that health problems respond exceptionally well to nutrition and other natural treatments. A healthy outside starts from the inside. In order to restore balance, I utilize a mind-body approach using the healing powers of food as medicine.
I offer a variety of services including one-on-one nutritional counseling, wellness packages, recipe creation & customization, cooking classes and corporate wellness programs. I work with my clients as a team to design personalized nutrition plans that are attainable, rewarding and rooted in health and wellbeing.
