Meet Trailblazer Nicolette Ray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolette Ray.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a sophomore in college when I decided to blow up my life. Up to that point, I played by the rules. I studied the right things, played sports, got straight As, and… I hated my life. I had built an identity around what I thought other people wanted from me instead of honoring my true self-expression.

I had started my self-discovery journey in 2011, binging on self-help books and taking tons of yoga classes. Slowly, I started living what I was reading and practicing at the studio. But it wasn’t until 2013 after starting my yoga-teacher training that I realized I was STILL living a lie even though I spent my free time on a yoga mat sipping chai tea.

I was sitting in a dorm room, sobbing my eyes out over my upcoming calculus test (another thing I was great at but hated deep down), realizing I was still living life based on what other people would think. That day, I dropped my calc class, changed my major from Global to Art History and Italian studies, and committed to being self-employed one day doing something I was head over heels for. And so, my search began.

I went into deep self-discovery and finally landed on my two great loves… graphic design (I’d been a big yearbook nerd in middle and high school and would spend my teenage years designing and copywriting for HOURS) and yoga. I knew that the branding and design industry was missing one big component that I had learned the hard way. In order to build a brand that really captures who you are, you have to understand who you really are and design your brand around your energy. So, I started my branding and graphic design business by combining yoga philosophy with brand strategy.

Has it been a smooth road?
Hahaha NO.

Entrepreneurship is the BEST self-development tool. One thing that I had to learn the hard way was creating a business around MY gifts and what I wanted to share in the world, rather than just focusing on what would be profitable or easy to sell.

About two years into my business I HATED what I had built. I was still playing small. I see this all the time with clients. They build something that they think is palatable and semi-on purpose. They write and create content by playing at half volume. FEW people in this online world are really owning who they are and being BOLD with their messaging, content, offers, etc.

I had built a successful business doing graphic design for clients that was stunning and in alignment with who they were because I could see their magic, but what I found is most of the women I worked with thought they needed a pretty logo or website, but what they really needed was alignment. They needed to get aligned within their own energy, their messaging, their voice, their visuals, etc to really build a brand and a business that fit.

I think that’s what trailblazing is all about. You have to know who you are in order to be confident in disrupting the status quo.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Nicolette Ray is an intuitive branding & business mentor who’s bridging the gap between business strategy and energetic magnetism. She believes that building an elevated brand is all about owning who you are, aligning with your truth, elevating your frequency, and showing up for your purpose. She helps her clients build brands through energetic mastery, aligned brand aesthetics, and magnetic marketing & messaging.

I’m sunshine in human form. I live my brand and I’m basically a big ball of light and joy. I teach/speak/write from that place, and people love my energy.

My unique take on things is that I help my clients build an aligned brand through their energy system (aka the chakra system). The chakras are like the building blocks of understanding who you are, unlocking your potential for success, and for building a brand that isn’t just pretty but it has legs to stand on. You can read more about that here:

I’m most proud of my ability to deeply understand my clients. I’m a bit like a translator. I can see/feel/understand my clients so well that I design and write as if I were them. I train myself to think like they do because I’m a master at reading energy and seeing people’s bullshit haha. I get people out of their fear and into alignment so they can finally feel confident in being visible with their brand.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I love me some Gabby Bernstein. She was the first teacher I ever had when I was hitting rock bottom as a 17-year-old. She took the same old self-help and modernized it. She teaches concepts that so many others have taught before her in a completely new way.

I had a high school teacher named Ms. Finn who was a total badass. She did things her own way and cared so much more about teaching than about following the rulebook. She’s the one who inspired me to do yoga. She was the only person I knew who was a yogi, and I saw in her that spark of life that so many people leave unlit within themselves because they’re too caught up in what other people think.

All of my yoga teachers, specifically Denise Lapides and Janet Stone who helped me walk into my darkness so I could find the light and alignment within myself.

And I love Rachel Hollis. She’s a badass who’s leading the way for so many women to own their desires and live a life that is in complete alignment. Her empire is fascinating to me.
