Meet Trailblazer Nancy Flint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Flint.

Nancy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sugar Mamma Caramels all began as a gift of love. I have been making my signature Sea Salt Caramels for Christmas gifts since 2009. Eventually with loads of encouragement from family and friends, I entered a candy contest and won 1st place! When I was featured on local San Diego news, the hosts asked, “Where can we buy these most incredible caramels?” Well, that sparked the flame inside me to launch my small business. I have owned my Cottage Food Operation (Dept. of Health permitted home kitchen) since 2012 and now offer 17 flavors of caramels along with other sweet treats such as cookies, marshmallows, and chocolates. I even have Vegan Caramels and Sugar Free Caramels now! You can find my caramels in over a dozen hotels and gift shops throughout San Diego County and on my website at

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is often bumpy, but I believe some of the most difficult things in life can be the most fulfilling. Jumping through all the hoops to receive my permit from the department of health was challenging, but now I often advise other women on how to get through the process. I knocked on a ton of doors to become a vendor in shops and hotels, so I had to develop a thicker skin ( I used to be super shy!) Persistence, patience and passion will persevere!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sugar Mamma Caramels – what should we know?
Caramel/candy making is not for the timid. Cooking for long hours at very high temperatures can be exhausting and dangerous, but I love the challenge! Since I work from home, I am free to work all hours of the day and night, usually 8-12 hours a day, seven days a week to keep up with demand. I am a sole proprietor, so it’s just me, myself, and I doing everything from cooking, wrapping, packaging, marketing, shipping…you name it! I am known for all my products being completely hand-crafted and all natural. I am most proud of my creative flavors like Meyer Lemon Caramels and Beer and Pretzels Caramels. I believe the love and passion I put into each and every piece of caramel, cookie, or specialty candy sets me apart. I am extremely proud and honored to have been voted “Favorite Dessert in San Diego” for the past two years in a row!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe that the food industry can be a great opportunity for women! Especially moms like me, who can work from home while raising their children and make a small successful business a reality is so empowering and a great example to our kids! My girls are so proud of me and are my biggest support squad along with my husband.
