Meet Trailblazer Morgen Howells

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgen Howells.

Morgen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My very first job was at a tiny flower stand when I was 15, It took no time for me to discover that I had found my passion for design and my talent with fresh flowers. It wasn’t until many years later that I really connected with my purpose as a floral designer…

I was married and a mom by the age of 19 and had the honor of being a stay at home mom for many years, just doing floral design as a “hobby”, while in between PTA meetings and coaching soccer, volunteering, etc. My husband was a good man, and a good provider, and also struggled his entire life with bipolar depression and addiction. Subsequently, at the age of 28, I became a widow when he succumbed to his illness and took his own life. The whole world as I knew it ceased to exist as I was then faced with a new life as a single mom of two small children, and really had no idea where to go or what to do. Immediately my path lead to hospitality, and I started my career in food service as a server, bartender, eventually, management and I was able to support us that way. I still hold a flame in my soul for hospitality and food service, I will probably always stay connected to that industry no matter what. But through the years, I still kept a pinky toe in floral design. It was because of something that really stuck with me in my heart at my husband’s funeral… everyone sent red roses. Everywhere, there were red roses! It meant something, truly. People were expressing love and support, grief and sadness, so many sentiments through those flowers. They weren’t just meaningless stems, they were a communication of real human emotion, and that meant something to ME! I never forgot that… and this was when my purpose was discovered.

Fast forward to the year 2012 when the most incredible man in the world entered my life, Chris Howells. We knew the moment we met that every obstacle in our journeys before had led us to each other. We really did fall in love at first sight (soooo cliche, I know, but it’s true!), and never looked back. At that time, I was a floral designer for another company part time and managing a restaurant full time. When we learned we were going to bring our baby girl into the world, once again, my whole world changed and perspective was SIGNIFICANTLY altered! It was soon after Charlie Victoria was born that my husband stepped forward and gave me his shoulders to stand on, he created our dream company, fleur.ish! It was how to work from home with our baby, doing what I truly loved, and create a vision and a purpose behind the design that I really believed in.

I truly believe that flowers are a physical expression of human emotion. They say “congratulations!” “I’m sorry”, “I love you”, “I miss you”…. they are there to welcome life into the world or to start a new life in marriage, to say goodbye when our loved ones leave this earth…they are so much more than just pretty flowers, they are life! I’ve discovered that MY whole purpose in life is to create happiness and cultivate kindness, and floral design is my medium to do so. It’s why we say fleur.ish is “floral design with humanity in mind.” There are so many opportunities to be kind and make someone happy every day, especially with flowers! I dare you to not be happy when someone hands you a beautiful bouquet. One of our favorite things that our company offers is the opportunity for our clients to donate their event florals to hospice patients. Many times we hear stories of nothing less than miracles happening, when a terminally ill patient who hasn’t even made eye contact with anyone in months, will suddenly smile and speak when a volunteer comes in the room with a beautiful arrangement of flowers for them. Flowers are amazing!!! I truly fall in love with my job on a daily basis when I see what is possible.

Chris and I are absolutely 50/50 partners in life and in our work. We are a team in every sense of the word, and I believe that is the biggest success of all. Fleur.ish is now five years old and we have quadrupled business in just this last year, and I am certain that is due to our partnership and commitment to humanity and compassion. We laugh together (a LOT!), we cry together, we problem solve together… and, of course, we fight and argue and all that goes along with a passionate relationship, but we always reel it back into what’s really important, which is simply being good humans! To each other, to our clients, and to everyone and everything! We are so happy about how far we’ve come and where we are going! Fleur.ish is truly a dream realized!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles in starting a business are plenty, especially as a woman! Even more so as a mompreneur! None of what we do could be possible if I didn’t enroll those around me in what we are up to, and ask for the support I need. There are so many strong, talented women out there, that when we support each other, anything is possible! Having the heart to serve is returned ten fold, so don’t be shy about asking how you may be of service, OR about asking for support when you need it! Make connections and nurture relationships whenever possible, take every opportunity to learn new tricks, no matter how old you are or how long you’ve been at it. Stay humble, yet confident, carry a grateful heart with you at all times… practice forgiveness and acceptance and be flexible, there is always a solution to any problem… and above all, hand out kindness like its candy on Halloween!!! You never know what folks are going through, and it takes zero effort just to smile and be kind. It has definitely been my experience that you get back what you put out there, and manifestation is a real thing!! I highly recommend radiating positivity and humanity, and manifest happiness and abundance. Truly, anything is possible, just DON’T EVER GIVE UP!!!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about fleur.ish – what should we know?
We are not a brick and mortar, neighborhood flower shop. We fancy ourselves an “event floral production company”, meaning, we exclusively create kick-ass floral designs and installations for special events, and mostly weddings, if we’re being honest. Although I do gravitate towards a personal style, I like to say that my style is your style when I’m designing for clients. I really do pride myself on being able to read my clients and provide THEIR vision, not just mine.

I think if you ask any of our clients they will tell you we are known for going above and beyond, exceeding expectations. I am big on communication and being approachable at all times, I want everyone to really get how much I value them as a person, not just a client. And, I feel very confident in saying that we are a valuable vendor, in that what you ultimately receive in product and in service is beyond any price tag. I believe in paying a fair price for the service received, I won’t haggle prices, but I will always be honest. I tell my clients if they can be committed to the overall outcome instead of every picture on their Pinterest board, we will create their vision in their budget. So far, we’re batting a thousand!

Our branding states “fleur.ish: fresh floral and seasonal decor and more…” The “and more” is what we thrive on!

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In my industry, I have to say females seem to dominate, which is rad! But I think it’s safe to say that is a unique situation, even in the 21st century. Women have already broken so many barriers in leadership, and especially now in the current climate of leadership for this country, we are seeing a HUGE female presence emerge and it is AWESOME! But, we still have a lot of walls to break down, and if I’m being honest, I think we women are responsible for a lot of them. I know I probably won’t get any popularity points saying this, but I think we women make it harder on ourselves by trying to “prove something”, or by making it a gender competition, and vilifying men (even though so many deserve it, believe me, I KNOW!) It’s about the balance, the yin, and the yang. Women and men are built to complement each other. There is natural chemistry that exists that we should embrace! And this has nothing to do with sexuality, this is about a natural partnership that can and should be utilized in ALL relationships, both business and personal. We need to empower men to empower us, women, by not only showing our strengths but acknowledging theirs. This is why I know our company, our brand, and our mission will be successful because my husband is the perfect business partner. Strong yet humble, compassionate and powerful, smart and savvy… and guess what, so am I! We build each other up, support each other when needed, and never let ego or gender throw our mutual respect out of balance. I think we women can get rid of many barriers by being inclusive and supportive of our male counterparts…. unless they’re a total D–K, then we should just take the reigns, like only a woman can (wink, wink).
