Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Nguyen.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Monterey, CA and studied film production at San Diego State. I moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to pursue working in the film industry but changed gears after realizing the lifestyle was not for me. I’m am now currently in the events industry, which is similar to film, but also very very different. I started Mawnie Eats in January of 2017 while working for a company that focused on dog content with weekly newsletters, products, and noteworthy dog happenings. Day in and day out, I was running and growing a handful of dog accounts as well as running the blog and busting out a weekly newsletter, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled, mainly due to my lack of love for dogs(they’re cool, but I’m more akin to cats). I knew that if I was capable of running multiple accounts for a topic I was a bit lackluster about, then why couldn’t I apply it to something I loved: food. So I went through many names before settling on Mawnie Eats and posted my first photo. I got to explore the new city I was in my food and it has been a joy ever since. As I started taking photos of the things I ate or made, my following started to grow, which was a new experience for me. It definitely wasn’t something that I was expecting, but it was exciting that people were interested in the content I was posting and the things I had to say about it. It still astounds me to this day that I get to do something like this, albeit not full-time…yet. It’s now been three years since I first posted and it’s amazing the different opportunities that have presented itself. I still feel like there’s a lot more that I want to take with this, such as working on my blog more with my recipes and partnering with specific brands, but I’m happy with where this ride has taken me thus far.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. It’s been easy in the sense that I do get to do it, but I don’t get to create as much as I want to since I work a full-time job in the events industry, which if you don’t know is exhausting There isn’t enough time in my day to do all the things I want to do and I feel like it’s a mental challenge to myself to want to create, but also I don’t want to be exhausted all the time. I do also have to be mindful when I’m doing too much for Mawnie Eats in my free time because I do want a social life, yet overall sometimes the deadlines I create for myself suffer. My advice for other people starting their journey is to just do it. Just start. If you don’t, you’ll always live in a perpetual what if and what’s worse than failing…not knowing. Get organized, set actionable goals, and do the damn thing!

I am a food blogger based in Los Angeles. I love to go out and try new foods, places, and all experiences from fine dining to some food stand on the street. Mawnie Eats allows me to try new foods in Los Angeles and beyond as well as showcase little gems in this large city. I also create recipes and hope to do more of that this year since I love to cook! I am most proud that I have been able to do this as a side hustle for the past three years, that my voice feels heard, and the friends I have foraged through this.
