Meet Trailblazer Miri Rossitto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miri Rossitto.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Miri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I had been working for a business planning firm for almost five years and while I loved the work, I believed (and still do) that a business plan was just a cloudy crystal ball. Success comes down to execution and I wanted to help entrepreneurs to successfully realize their dreams. So, I quit my comfortable, well-paying job and went out on my own. I started with absolutely nothing and a very empty office. I didn’t have a client let alone a prospect in site. I immediately started knocking on doors, I joined local networking groups and my family spent two years living off of our savings. Things started to change as I added more and more clients but I knew that something was missing. My need to control every little business detail was preventing me from having a healthy company. That is when Nicola walked into my office.

Nic and I had met years before at a Chamber of Commerce mixer. It was there that we bonded over a mutual disdain for such events. We stayed in touch and even worked together a few times over the years. Then, one day, Nic walked into my office because she was conflicted over a job offer. We talked for a few hours and by the end of that meeting, I absolutely knew that Nicola was the missing piece. I am not exaggerating when I say that from the moment Nic and I put our energies together, Cowe Consulting’s growth has been unstoppable. Not long after we met Alex, our incredible Director of Design and just last month, we were thrilled to add Savannah to our team. I pinch myself every day that I get to be surrounded by such smart and talented women who love their work and truly want to make the world a better place.

In a little over three years, Cowe Consulting has gone from an idea to a thriving firm that is actively building better businesses and stronger communities. I couldn’t be prouder.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth. I watched for months as money went out and none came in. I questioned my motivations and choices daily and felt judged by everyone I knew. I cried often, I struggled with guilt and yet deep in my soul, I was exhilarated and hopeful.

I have likened my business journey to that of having a baby. Anyone who has ever had a baby, held a baby or watched a movie about a baby has an opinion on how you should raise your baby. From the moment you announce that you are starting your own business, you will be subjected to listen to countless stories about late nights, early mornings and stern warnings as to how not to “lose yourself in the process.” The intentions are well-meaning but the advice can be overwhelming and scary. For me, it was the people who offered support, only when asked, that proved to be invaluable to me. That goes for both babies and business. It is easy to assume that what worked for one person will definitely work for another and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Unconditional support and broadminded statements are exactly what a new business owner, and quite frankly, a new mother, need in those first years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cowe Consulting – what should we know?
Cowe Consulting is a business and brand development firm. We work with entrepreneurs and business owners to help them develop customized strategies to build a healthier, more successful business. Success means different things to different people though. Some of our clients want leadership training. Others want to freshen up their branding. We have clients that retain us monthly to manage their social media and other clients visit us weekly for business and leadership coaching.

Everything that we do boils down to two principles: education and inspiration. We believe that teaching and inspiring people are the greatest gifts that we can give and if you can do that with your business, then you will be successful.

Cowe Consulting is not a good fit for everyone. We are choosy about the clients that we work with. If you are only looking to make more money then our firm isn’t for you. We are looking to work with businesses that are making positive impacts on the world around them. My team and I believe that community is everything and that while money is an incredibly important resource, it certainly isn’t everything. Non-profit consulting is another service that we are proud to offer because we have found that when you surround yourself with wonderful people who just want to give of themselves, the impossible becomes possible.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My father was a game show director. I don’t think anyone outside of the entertainment industry truly understands or appreciates the amount of multitasking that a director is responsible for. I remember sitting and watching in awe as he rapidly fired off shot instructions to six different camera operators that changed by the second. One word or one facial expression could alter everything and he alone had to anticipate the moment, capture the moment and move on to the next shot in the blink of an eye. I pride myself on running really fast but my father will always be the Master.

The most valuable piece of advice that my father gave to me was, “Miri, you can never lose what you never had.” This advice has helped me accept the thousands of times that I have been told no. It has helped me take risks that I most likely would not have taken. It has brought me comfort to this day when I fail because it allows me the room to let the bad stuff go.
