Meet Trailblazer Melissa Navarrete

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Navarrete.

Melissa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2007, I graduated beauty school with a huge passion for hair and makeup. Unfortunately, during this time… my parents were also going through a nasty divorce and I realized how much my mom had relied on my dad for financial support. It was devastating to watch my mom lose everything she knew and had. Her home, her car… her partner in life. My mom had to now support herself after 25 years of marriage. She had to start all over. It broke my heart. It also scared the crap out of me and I promised myself at that moment. I would never allow myself to rely on anyone else to support me. I didn’t know how or what, but I knew I had to take my future into my own hands. I had to do more than just be a stylist at a salon. Six months later, my best friend was getting married and she hired a well-known hair and makeup company to do everyone’s hair and makeup for the big day. The big day came and these 2 girls arrived to do everyone’s hair and makeup and most of the bridal party didn’t like their looks. In a panic… my bestie asked me to fix the girls. I had never done wedding hair and makeup before, so I was scared, to say the least! But, I jumped right in and they loved it!! It was right then and there that I came up with Blush by M. Marie! It hit me like a lightning bolt! I was going to start a company based on the bridal Industry and I was going to build a team of girls who were specifically trained in bridal looks! It wasn’t even a month after my besties wedding that I came up with my company name, a website and a drive to make this happen!!! At the time, I had 3 jobs to make ends meet. I was working part-time at a salon, part-time on set doing hair and makeup and then working at MAC Cosmetics. I HUSTLED! I spent all my extra money on my education in bridal hair and makeup. I took class after class, lectures joined business groups and attended bridal shows all over Orange a County. I started marketing myself through friends and family and was taking any wedding I could! After 3 years of focusing on Blush and all while still working my other jobs… I was ready (and able) to quit my jobs and focus all of my attention on Blush by M. Marie! In 2014, my husband and I got married and moved to Temecula to better invest my time in Blush and to establish a team of girls out in the IE. After all… I was spending many weekends out there anyways due to the rise of wedding venues in the area! It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done! Leaving the only city I had ever known, leaving my family and friends… all to start this dream of mine! Turns out it was the best decision I’ve ever made!!! I never imagined it would be what it is today! Who knew that my passion would find me and become my story!? Today, I have a successful, well known, highly rated business doing weddings not only in Orange County, San Diego, Inland Empire and Las Vegas… but, I have a team of 6 girls who are full time with me. Three of them have left their jobs to solely work for Blush! Oh and as for my mom… she works for me now!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m blessed to see what Blush has become… but it’s never a smooth road!

Nothing worth having is easy!! My advice for other young women wanting to turn their passion into a career…. first and for most, know that it won’t come easy! It requires not only the passion for what you’re doing… but dedication and the promise to yourself to NEVER GIVE UP!! I learned how hard it is to have a business. It takes a lot to run it, keeps it and to keep your employees happy… and that’s just a piece, the business side of it! There’s also the client side… keeping your clients happy and creating a reputation for others to recognize! It also takes money to make money! If you don’t invest in yourself, you can’t expect anyone else to! You have to have patience and dedication to your field. Knowing your work never ends and constantly educating yourself is key! Use the free social media platforms to your advantage and stay FOCUSED!!

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have def found that joining social media groups that share your passion is great for meeting others like yourself! you can share your thoughts, concerns and ask others for advice when needed. Also, for me personally, marketing with the right platforms (i.e: The Knot, Wedding Wire) has given me not only a great source to market my company… but also, to connect with other wedding vendors!
