Meet Trailblazer Laurel Klein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurel Klein.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laurel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My mother had always been into photography when I was growing up – constantly wanting to get a picture of us where ever we were. I was always fascinated with the camera whenever she’d be shooting. She taught me at an early age (around 6) how to shoot film. When I was 13, my parents gifted me with my first film camera! From then on I was always taking photos of my friends, nature, my pets… you name it!

It wasn’t until I was 19 and I decided to enroll in a photography class at Art Center in Pasadena. That’s when I really started experiencing with portrait work & more intimate assignments. My favorite thing from that class was being able to shoot raw & real moments, sharing them in front of the class and then being able to get excellent advise (whether good or bad) from my professor and peers.

I first started “professionally” taking pictures when I was about 24. My sister was pregnant, wanted maternity photos & my best friend had just gotten engaged & wanted engagement pictures. I agreed to both of those sessions and from there… the rest is history! Word of mouth and social media really made my business take off and I am forever grateful for my family, friends & past clients who have referred me to so many people!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? No.
Have I loved every second of it? YES.

I think the hardest thing for me was understanding and BEING OKAY WITH the fact that this was going to be a struggle. I learned from my father (who is 1- the smartest man I know & 2- an entrepreneur himself) that self-made business really don’t start to see any major income until after the first five years… so for me, it was preparing to not make a lot BUT still be doing what I love.

People always say that if you’re genuinely doing what you love for work, then it doesn’t work at all and I, 100% stand by that quote. I think it’s important to remember that whatever you’re doing for work, whether you’re just starting a business or working at some corporate company – if you love what you’re doing & you’re happy doing it – then you’ve already made it.

I think the biggest piece of advice I can give to young women who are just starting their journey is to just remember to KEEP GOING. There are going to be obstacles, roadblocks, money shortages, YOU NAME IT…. but these are normal. Nothing in life comes easy & you always have to remember to work hard for what you want. There’s ALWAYS going to be someone better than you, more talented, whatever it may be… but that doesn’t mean your work won’t inspire others just as much as someone else’s work inspired you. So, just keep going.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about LPK Photo – what should we know?
I am a portrait & wedding photographer! I like to say I specialize in people in love, but I also adore taking pictures of families. I’d say I’m most known for my natural & organic vibe. There’s a consistency to my images, whether it’s in the lighting or the posing… but I try to make all of my shoots very easy going & natural.

As LPK Photo, I am most proud to create moments – not pictures. I want to capture you in your most natural way, whether it’s in your home or running around a field… to me that’s when I get the most organic images. I want my clients to look back at these images and remember EXACTLY how they felt at that exact moment. That to me means I did my job.

I think what sets me aside from other photographers in the area is the way I use light. I am obsessed with sun flares, light leaks, silhouettes, a morning glow…. pretty much anything that light can create in a photo – I love. I’m not afraid to share a blurry image, but with a beautiful sun flare because to me, that’s part of the art I’m creating for my clients.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I’m a goofball, don’t take life too seriously & love a good laugh so my favorite podcasts right now are anything or anyone who is funny. Specifically ‘Your Mom’s House’ or ‘The Joe Rogan Experience.’
