Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Huynh.
Kathy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Kathy Huynh Artistry about six years ago, while I was working in the financial industry. I felt suffocated because my day job was not giving me the creative joy and fulfillment that I had longed for. That’s when I knew I needed to start a side hustle doing what I truly love while getting back to my artistic roots. I enrolled in a makeup academy and after graduation, I launched my career as a makeup artist in the bridal industry. After years of trials and errors, I was able to build my clientele through word of mouth referrals and using the power of social media to market my services.
Today, our business is thriving. What started off with just me working alone has now grown into a team consisting of numerous talented and heart led makeup artists and hairstylists.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. When I first started out, my biggest struggle was getting people to pay for my services. Everyone thought I was doing this makeup thing as a hobby, they really didn’t take me seriously. In the beginning, there were a lot of people that doubted my ability to turn this so-called hobby into a thriving business. Another big hurdle for me was dealing with rejection and the fear of failure. As an artist and in my case, a recovering perfectionist, you are always your own biggest critic. There were a lot of times when I felt like I was not good enough, especially when I would do a makeup trial and the bride ended up choosing another artist. It was already scary putting myself and my work out there for others to judge, but it was especially difficult when people said NO to booking me.
My biggest advice for young women starting their journey is to give yourself grace and don’t give up. When you first start out, you will undoubtedly make tons of mistakes. So, give yourself grace and understand it is in those mistakes and struggles that you really get to learn and grow both personally and professionally.
People will judge your work and doubt your ability no matter where you are on your journey. Don’t let the naysayers steer you off your path. Tune them out and use it as your motivation to keep going.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes. Looking back, pursuing a career as a makeup artist was a very natural path for me. Growing up, I was very artistic. I spent most of my free time painting and drawing. During my time in elementary school, I competed in many art competitions. I think these experiences really set me up for future/current success because it taught me to be resilient and to keep working hard even if I didn’t finish in first place.
