Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Hempstead.
Katelyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been an attention-seeking little goober, and that brought me from community children’s theatre to college improv to where I am now! Which is writing and performing and podcasting and just kind of general goof-em-ups.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Tbh yes kind of? When you’re white, able-bodied, and have no debt it’s not that hard to get by in LA. I’ve had some extremely dumb and humiliating jobs, like working for a rich lady who paid me to be her friend and go grocery shopping with her or working for a catering company where I spilled chimichurri all over myself in front of Clint Eastwood or writing Twitter copy for a Real Housewife’s booze brand. But along the way, I’ve always gotten to do fun cool comedy stuff with my friends, which is what I’m really here for.
We’d love to hear more about you and your personal brand.
I’m funny AND nice! I guess that’s kind of my whole brand. Also, I have a podcast about conspiracy theories and have become a kind of expert in the paranormal. PLEASE ask me about aliens, for the love of God, won’t someone ask me about aliens??
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was a weird anxious kid who wore a back brace, loved Star Trek, and had lice for four years straight. It was extremely inevitable that I’d end up a comedian.
