Meet Trailblazer Kate Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Wright.

Kate, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started this crazy journey almost 8 years ago! At first I was working for a small boutique Los Angeles PR firm and was running national campaigns and activation events for my clients, and while this was so much fun and so eye opening in terms of what I was capable of, I wanted something MORE!

I took a receptionist job at a local LA bridal boutique and eventually worked my way onto the sales floor. It was here that I learned about the multiple sides of the bridal / wedding industry and needless to say I was hooked. Getting to know brides and their wedding day vision and ultimately helping them with such an important purchase towards their special day was just so much fun! Talk about living Say Yes to the Dress every day!

My bridal experience tripled when I was asked to come work for Carolina Herrera Los Angeles as their Bridal Specialist and then (2 years later) I would eventually move on to become the Bridal Director at Oscar de la Renta Los Angeles (Melrose Place).

I guess I was never destined to “work for somebody else” because though I was embracing these amazing employment opportunities, I could always feel this tug of wanting something more. (…I’m guessing this is a theme of mine!) I had built Blue Door Creative on the side of all of these projects and I could just feel that this was my answer to my next career move.

Two years ago I said goodbye to corporate America and set forth with building this little business of mine into the full time career that it is now!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I noticed that a lot of people in my life were like: “You are working for yourself now, you have so much time on your hands!”

Um, false.

I would say I actually have less time but have more flexibility and really, I have learned that flexibility is everything! I think it is so important, almost crucial, to find your crew that can be flexible alongside you in this journey.

I have missed birthdays, family bbqs, you name it – BUT (!) if you have that solid crew behind you, you can really take a run at anything entrepreneurial life throws at you.

Becoming your own “money maker” means the road is never going to be exactly straight or smooth. Be realistic in your goals and take all the help you can get. Reach out and make coffee dates with people you admire in your industry, make new friends along the way, and weed out the people and tasks that don’t feed you or lift you up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blue Door Creative – what should we know?
I strive to stay as flexible and as realistic in my business as possible. I know there are so many instant tools out there for a couple starting their wedding planning journey. You have Pinterest, you have Instagram, you have your best friend who got married 6 months ago who thinks they are an expert … I get it!

That’s why I try to keep it simple in terms of the packages that I offer and I often find myself telling my clients, my time is your time. It’s important to build a trusting relationship with your client.

I also strive to lovingly educate my couples along the way. Wedding Planning is an investment, and we all know that money doesn’t grow on trees. As your wedding planner, I am here to help you feel confident about the investments you are making towards such an important day and help plan out all of the logistics that go into make your wedding day vision a reality!

Which women have inspired you in your life?
First and foremost, my Mum. She is a powerhouse of a woman who has grown her own business and has been her own boss for as long as I can remember. Being around her always makes me want to do better and grander things with my life. She is a huge reason why I got started in the entrepreneurial game.

The other women who have inspired me are my fierce group of friends (both who are in the industry and those who I have be friends with for years) I am so grateful to be growing older in a very female empowered state of mind right now. Look what’s happening in politics, the world, etc. Women are speaking up! I am so proud to say that all of the women in my life represent this new force of “GIRL POWER!” – It’s so inspiring!
