Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Stamm.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been interested in nutrition ever since high school, where I battled with weight gain after taking a job at a local bakery. I tried all different diets and plans but the only thing that I found to really work was living a balanced lifestyle and seeing a Nutritionist for accountability. After my experience with a Nutritionist, I knew it was the career I wanted to pursue. I ended up receiving a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Psychology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then immediately started working for the same Nutritionist who helped me lose the weight – Diet for Health in La Canada. After working for Diet for Health for a couple of years, I was offered a position as Nutritionist at The Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu. I worked there for three years and loved it. I learned so much about the psychology of eating and had a amazing experience connecting with the guests there and other coworkers who helped me grow so much.
After Biggest Loser, my husband got a new job and with the move I had to change jobs as well. I worked for Whole Foods Market as The Healthy Eating Specialist and then for Public Health Foundation. At Public Health Foundation, I was able to get accepted into and complete the Dietetic Internship. I then became a Registered Dietitian. After years of working in different fields of nutrition, I decided to pursue my life long dream of starting private practice. I now run Healthy Medium Nutrition out of the Glendale – Pasadena area, where I offer one on one nutrition counseling to help clients meet their goals. I love being able to meet clients in the middle and remove the whole “diet” mentality. I focus on lifelong habit change and realistic planning. We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I find the road to a career you love always has lots of ups and downs. The hardest part for me was finding a dietetic internship which would allow me to work during it. That took persistence and searching! But life always does seem to have a way of working out for the best even if in the moments of struggle, it doesn’t seem that way! My advice would be to never give up and “don’t quit your daydream”!
We’d love to hear more about Healthy Medium Nutrition.
I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in private practice. Healthy Medium Nutrition focuses on helping clients meet there own personal health goals in a practical and realistic manner. I am proud to be a dietitian who focuses on overall health and tangible goals such as: “I want more energy to play with my grandson” or “I would love to be less stressed around food” rather than just a number on the scale.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I would definitely say that my struggles with binge eating and weight gain in high school, helped shape me as a better nutritionist. Even though, struggling through binge eating disorder and going through weight gain and loss was no picnic, I can truly empathize with clients! I have taken the time to study evidence based nutrition and health and combined it with my own personal experiences to be the best dietitian that I can be!
