Meet Trailblazer Jessica Motes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Motes.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
First off, I would like to say thank you for reaching out, for your interest in The Naughty Cookie and how this sweet company came to be! I’m excited to share with you and your readers how a Miami girl with Cuban roots turned LA into her vegan cookie villa!

I went vegan almost two years ago and being that I have such a sweet tooth and that my fave dessert of all time is a classic chocolate chip cookie, I decided the first thing I have to try is a vegan chocolate chip cookie! I embarked on this sweet expedition only to be disappointed along the way and trust me when I say I tried just about every vegan cookie I could get my hands on even the ones I had to order from out of state. I was in shock that vegan cookies not only lacked in flavor but also in texture.

I’ve always been the woman who keeps her standards high even when it comes to a vegan chocolate chip cookie and why not?! If I’m going to treat myself, it better be great! Due to the lack of delicious vegan cookies, I decided to roll my sleeves up, get in the kitchen and make my own version of what a vegan chocolate chip cookie should taste like! If you are asking what that is, picture your most favorite moist, chewy, regular chocolate chip cookie and don’t forget to dust it off with French sea salt (sweet & savory because some times you can have the best of both worlds) it’s as simple as that, well picturing it, not coming up with the recipe. The recipe was months in the making with some trial and error but I set a goal to change the vegan cookie game and I wasn’t willing to back down from it, not for one second. I knew once I had those who aren’t vegan obsessing over the vegan cookies I baked that it was time to introduce The Naughty Cookie to the world, keeping something this delicious to myself would just be downright selfish (yes, they are that good). The Naughty Cookie consists of four different flavors, Chocolate Chip, Triple Chocolate Chunk, Ooey Gooey S’mores, and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and I honestly cannot tell you which is my favorite because they are all equally satisfying with every bite!

Why The Naughty Cookie? It started with the slogan “on our sweetest behavior” because it’s cruelty-free and it’s Naughty because it tastes just like a nonvegan cookie, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference!

About a week after launching The Naughty Cookie, I was contacted by Williams-Sonoma, it was surreal, to say the least. I purchased my very first Kitchen Aid mixer at Williams-Sonoma in Miami, many years ago and its the same Kitchen Aid Mixer I started The Naughty Cookie with! The photography I shot and posted up on The Naughty Cookie page on Instagram (@thenaughtycookie) caught the eye of someone amazing who also happens to be on the marketing team at WS. I was asked if I would be interested in having The Naughty Cookie hold its very first pop-up at their Beverly Hills flagship store, needless to say, there was no hesitation, it was an immediate “yes! I’d absolutely love to!” The response from the customers was everything I could have hoped for and more. I had so many nonvegans and vegan customers rave and buy boxes of the cookies, I made a little over a hundred cookies and sold out in a little under 2 hours, it was the most amazing feeling ever! Williams-Sonoma is such a great platform to host pop-ups for The Naughty Cookie, I continued and still continue to host pop-ups through-out multiple WS locations in California. In fact, everything came full circle a few weeks back when I celebrated The Naughty Cookie’s 1-year anniversary at Williams-Sonoma Beverly Hills, it was magical! I’m very thankful to the Williams-Sonoma team for believing in The Naughty Cookie since the beginning.

Year one for The Naughty Cookie has been filled hard work, dedication and goals, all that led to amazing memories, from taking part in multiple sold-out festivals to having one of my favorite spots Joan’s on Third carry the cookies at both of their locations (they sell out fast, so hurry in and stock up once I announce deliveries weekly via Instagram @thenaughtycookie) to my fave vegan Thai spot in studio city H.O.P.E also carrying The Naughty Cookie. Not in SoCal? No worries, The Naughty Cookie can now be purchased via its website It feels like a dream come true to be able to share The Naughty Cookie not only SoCal but now nationwide!

What’s in store for year two you may ask? Well, I just launched one of my fave flavors “French Girl Mocha”, a mocha macaron from a delicious vegan macaron company Vegaron, baked inside my most loved vegan chocolate chip cookies and voila, tres magnifique! It will be available only at pop-ups but the possibilities are endless for this one. I also have a few other exciting announcements coming up but you’ll have to follow The Naughty Cookie on Instagram to be one of the first to find out.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported The Naughty Cookie since day 1, my family, my friends, my love, all the events that have hosted The Naughty Cookie, the fellow vendors who accepted The Naughty Cookie into their community and the most amazing Naughty Cookie customers ever, seriously they are the best! I have such an amazing support system and I couldn’t be any more grateful to them all.

Believe in yourself and the rest will follow.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I take everything day by day and I never give up. Even if it means having to stay up for 26 hours to bake hundreds of cookies for a two-day festival because I sold out the first day. I knew becoming an entrepreneur was not going to be a smooth road, even the yellow brick road had obstacles along the way! If you are doing something you believe in, something you are passionate about you will prevail. Learn from the obstacles, they make you stronger after all.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Naughty Cookie – what should we know?
The Naughty Cookie specializes in vegan cookies that don’t taste “vegan.”

Our cookies are moist and chewy and will have you begging for more.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women can be entrepreneurs, it’s a beautiful thing!
