Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Bradley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At 23 years old, I founded my first company, a retail clothing store. This was in 2006 when it certainly wasn’t as cool as it is now to be a female entrepreneur. It was a truly isolating and challenging navigating owning a company at such a young age and having limited resources. (Now, I have a strong network and my podcast game is on point, LOL!)
While running the company, I continued to buy and consult for numerous retail operations. I parlayed this venture into multiple stores as well as a subscription box service that specialized in women’s clothing, apothecary and lifestyle goods.
My years in the retail and wholesale world led me closer to my lifelong obsession for fragrance and apothecary goods. I found that fast fashion wasn’t aligning with my values and wanted to create something cleaner with an artisan focus. That set me on the path to discovering this passion project —now business—Apothenne Los Angeles. We are a candle and apothecary studio on the Westside of Los Angeles. I knew I would find myself in this space eventually and I am so proud to share our goods with over 35 retailers and have worked on a dozen collaborations and custom projects for other businesses.
Philanthropy is a huge driving force for me as well. Over the years, and still, now, I have made it a priority to use my brand(s) as a platform to bring awareness and funding to organizations that are doing incredible work. In addition, I have worked to create events that empower female makers and artists — to provide them with a platform to showcase and sell their wares, while making it my mission to shine light on the social and economic importance of women in business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road! It has been exhilarating and fulfilling — but there’s been many challenges and struggles — still are.
As I mentioned, being an entrepreneur most of my life has made me feel really lonely and isolated at times. This led me to seek out partnerships and people who were a poor fit. Believing I needed a co-founder and or business partner was a mistake I made on two occasions and have had to learn some hard lessons from that. Only now do I know that trusting in my intuition and in my natural abilities, having a strong network of fellow business owners and people around me who support and believe in me is the way for me.
Advice I would give to other young women who are just starting on their journey is to know that this is a beautiful ride of highs and lows… that there is no big finish to any of this. That you will need to ride the wave with style and grace… have a ton of compassion for yourself and others and always, ALWAYS take risks. Put yourself out there — you will absolutely fail from time to time, but it will set your soul on fire to live in such a vulnerable courageous way!

We believe in giving back to our community and inspiring change…
I am most proud of our Pouring with Purpose division of the company. I personally work with the founders and visionaries behind selected nonprofit organization(s) to create a candle that helps deliver their message by inspiring the senses. The custom aesthetic and scent of these candles align with the organization’s vision and vibe, creating a functional art form for the greater good. We then call upon our community–and together, we create this candle! A group of friends, volunteers, and supporters gather to bring this vision to life. Together, we lovingly hand-pour the inventory for the nonprofit. The candles are then used in fundraising efforts and we continue to promote, ship, and sell on their behalf, all season long!
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I grew up in Michigan and I am the oldest of 6 children. I learned to care for myself and my siblings… I felt wildly independent at a young age. I think in a large, and certainly dysfunctional, family (I had an alcoholic father who was not around) it is possible to get overlooked. And while this was painful then, I recognize it now as a blessing — I am grateful for the independence it taught me. It instilled a caring, empathic character as well as reinforced my work ethic… it is strong and unshakable. It gave me a ton of resiliency– that is a trait I admire in others and I hope to emulate that. All of this definitely played an outsized role in setting me up for success later in life.
