Meet Trailblazer Iris Cherng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Cherng.

Iris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2013, my mom started developing skin allergies to department-brand products. My parents are both holistic doctors of natural medicine, so my mom realized she could use her knowledge about herbs. Shortly after, I developed psoriasis. I then became OBSESSED with reading EVERYTHING on my beauty bottles, but I realized everything natural + organic out there was really expensive — especially as a broke college student. So, I started hitting the kitchen and making my own recipes to help out my own skin problems (acne, acne scarring, blackheads, dark circles – basically what every young woman deals with!) Now, you can find our products at beauty and lifestyle retailers across the United States, like Ulta, Riley Rose, Francesca’s and Charming Charlie.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been the smoothest road to get here. Many obstacles have been resolved through trial and error, and the biggest lesson I’ve learned in business is that people aren’t always going to believe you, but you have YOU. Each time we work on a new project or have potential deals with retailers, my business comes into a place on a journey that I’ve never walked before… creating a website, developing new packaging for our products. The more you believe in yourself, the more people will align with you. You’ll start finding yourself to be very resourceful. Believing in yourself is so important, especially in times when no one else does. Don’t let people and their opinions bring you down. If you know you got something, keep going. Persistence and belief in yourself are key. Remember, there is no success without struggle.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Honey Belle – what should we know?
Our company mission is to generate health + self-confidence, through playful care and generous self-love, using effective natural ingredients. What makes Honey Belle unique is that each ingredient and each product is catered and designed specifically to help and target a certain skin issue that people deal with. My parents both have backgrounds in natural, holistic, and oriental medicine, so our products are inspired and made with very simple formulas, catered to individuals with sensitive skin or those looking for healthier alternatives. We’ve helped thousands of people so far, through our Soaps for Souls Program (each body soap purchased, one is donated to an individual in need!), as well as helping our audience and customers achieve self-love and self-confidence in their own skin. What I’m most proud of… is that I was able to turn a hobby into a complete business, and now sold in thousands of stores… I wouldn’t have been able to do this if I was listening to all the voices in my head, saying “you can’t do it…” “how can you possibly be sold in stores..”, “what you’re doing isn’t a real business…” Instead, I just kept pushing. Failure was not – and is still no, an option.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes, definitely I feel that my past has shaped much of what I experience. Growing up, I was a natural leader and creative. There were definitely lots of signs of my entrepreneurship during my childhood. I started a car wash business when I was 7, sold snacks from Costco as well as little tchotchkes at the local swap meet, as well as touched on my creative side as I began to develop, produce, and edit videography at age 13. In my childhood to young adulthood, my parents always gave me creative freedom to find my passions, and although I felt like they had high expectations of me to get a full-time job at a large company, they were extremely supportive of me when I decided to quit my job and pursue Honey Belle.
