Meet Trailblazer Drew Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Jones.

Drew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky I was always a little different from everyone else. When I was a kid, I used to set up my own talk show in my grandmother’s living room and drag anyone who would put up with me onto the couch. I loved hearing people’s stories. I loved understanding someone’s heart. I knew very early on that storytelling was something I would never grow tired of. In 2014, I packed up two suitcases and moved to Los Angeles with a solid three hundred dollars in my bank account. I took every production job I could get my hands on and I worked hard. I skipped holidays, worked long hours, had a few financially motivated mental breakdowns, and even thought about giving up more than once. At the end of the day, I just wanted to see people who looked more like me on my screen. I craved to celebrate the people who were brave enough to make their art go beyond what Hollywood had seen before. In 2017 I came across AfterBuzz TV, a network of creatives started by Maria Menounos and Keven Undergaro, it was there that I truly began to tell those stories. I’ve interviewed people I grew up watching on my TV, I’ve walked red carpets for movies I could only dream of, I’ve had the opportunity to have my opinion influence thousands weekly. I am only a small part in a much bigger plan to help Hollywood look like the rest of the world, colorful, beautiful, and diverse.

Has it been a smooth road?
If I had a dollar for every time I heard the word “no” because of how I looked I would make as much money as Beyonce! No one tells you exactly how hard chasing your dreams is going to be. Stability is hardly a word that I would use to describe the entertainment business. This industry will try and convince you that who you are isn’t enough. It’ll tell you that you’re too black, or opinionated, or not pretty enough and sometimes it will really sound convincing. The best advice I can give to anyone starting on their journey is to take care of your heart. I wanted to make something of myself so badly that sometimes I wasn’t being the nicest to myself. Take yourself on dates, unplug your tech, get a manicure! Whatever can bring you back to a place of peace even if it’s just for an hour or so, do it and do it consistently. Your mental health above everything else is most important. Understand that what’s meant to be yours will always be yours no matter how you pursue it.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a host and producer who specializes in black pop culture. Most people familiar with my name know me from AfterBuzz TV’s Superhero and Fantasy channel or Black Hollywood Live. I have interviewed celebrities from Seth Rogen, Lana Condor, Niecy Nash, Tyra Banks, and Debra Messing. My goal is to have interviews that have substance and I truly believe people can take away something from my work. I have always found that the most interesting part of entertainment is the platform it provides to bring awareness to important topics. I am extremely proud to deliver interviews that bring people hope and challenge people to get involved in helping one another. I think that may be what sets me apart from others. I truly want to create a connection with you wherever you’re watching my content. I want you to feel seen and heard.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The beauty of being a woman is that there are SO many things that make us different and I think it is about time we celebrated that. In my opinion, there are too many opinions of what a woman “should” be and not enough outlets allowing women to just be. We live in a society that takes the joy out of pitting women against one another and sometimes we allow them to do it to us. We’ve been fighting over a singular seat at the table when in reality, we need to just start pulling up our own chairs and forcing a space for ourselves. We live in a time where content is accessible at the touch of a button, C R E A T E! Celebrate your originality and stop dissecting why other’s art is wrong in your eyes.
