Meet Trailblazer Deborah Reynolds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Reynolds.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a stay home mom raising my three children when I was invited to my sister in laws graduation at a beauty school. I have always been attracted to beauty and fashion but this was different. The smells, the sounds… it just felt so familiar. It felt like home. I signed up for beauty school the next day. Once I was licensed, I started waxing and giving facials from home to anyone that would let me. One day, I received a call from a woman that owned a local beauty supply. She asked if I would please come and visit her. When I arrived, she had skincare products that she had gift-wrapped saying I want to thank you! You send so many people here to buy products! She then offered a treatment room to me saying… “you are a good girl and I just want you here”. She never charged me one dollar. I will never forget what that woman did for me. I have adopted the same generous spirit and always try and remember how the things we do can be life changing for others. I went on to work for a really well known corporate spa. It was there I found my mentors. The energy was contagious and I was truly inspired. I learned how to create a experience not just perform a beauty treatment. I worked at a handful of high end spas with celebrities and the wealthy. The atmosphere was glamorous and indulgent. I started to truly understand what works and what doesn’t at the spa. I’m so grateful for my experience in high volume spas. Today, I own and operate 2 skincare centers as well as a manufacturing company that makes sugaring paste, support products and education for other professionals in my field. I have tried to pull in the luxurious feeling without the outrageous price tag so everyone can experience it not just the wealthy.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has by far been the most challenging endeavor besides raising my family. It has also been one of my proudest achievements. There are many ups and downs in business. It’s definitely not as glamorous as Instagram portrays it. It takes hard work. Prioritizing building your business isn’t always easy. My advice to young women starting out is to SLOW DOWN. The industry has radically changed since I got my start. It took me many years to open my own skincare center. I learned from mentors, and women that paved the way for me. Social media is a part of our daily life now and it can be a great tool for an entrepreneur however it can also cause feelings of self-doubt or thinking… why are they so ahead of me? why am I not growing as fast? These are merely distractions. Don’t rush your success. Get a mentor and find out what brings you passion, what inspires you and do that!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SugarMama Skin Sugar Tan – what should we know?
I am most proud to say we are not a “brand” we are a “feeling”. The feeling is authentic, warm, safe, comforting with radical acceptance. Our skin care center is a place people come to not only get their beauty service but to make connections. I personally work in the treatment room 4 days a week and the other days I take care of all the business needs, product production and sales. We are a very active little business. Both of our locations stay consistently busy with returning guests. Our most popular service is… drumroll… Brazilian sugar wax. To help a woman get through such a service without trauma is a gifting. Lucky for me, I’ve handpicked the staff that even includes a couple of family members and trained them myself. Each one of us truly cares about the guest’s experience. It can be extremely intimidating to walk into a service like this and all of us feel a sense of responsibility give comfort. Create a welcoming environment and exceed our guests expectations. We also offer facials and spray tans. Watching a woman’s confidence rise right before your eyes is something that never gets old, after 17 years I still feel giddy when I know I helped a woman love herself just a little more.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I learned from mentors before all incredible resources however I do have my favorite accounts on Instagram.

And the “Secret”.
