Meet Trailblazer Crystal Correa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Correa.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Crystal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always wanted to get into filmmaking, in one form or the other. When I was younger, I was always in drama, the arts was easy for me to understand, unlike other fields. It was something that came naturally. As I got older, I started to focus more on the business side. More importantly, the financial side of the business. This is key to keep a business or career in any field growing and running. Some ideas are very seasonal and trends come in go but numbers don’t lie.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. It’s been a very bumpy and tricky one. Do your research, don’t rely on someone to do it for you because what may work for them may not work for you and vice versus. I take things ” case by case”, “project by project”. Currently, I am getting ready to put together my pitch for my pilot version of my award-winning digital series “Crystal the web series”. And it’s all on me to get it ready, waiting around for someone else to do it is a risk I won’t take. And now, there is more of a platform for women in film to grow, so this is the time to do the hard work and getting moving!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about C + MEDIA PRODUCTIONS – what should we know?
I am a filmmaker/businesswoman/ artist. I started my production company last year, C + MEDIA PRODUCTIONS, and we are gaining success with our award-winning digital series ” Crystal the web series”, it’s on demand and free to the public to watch through our website. All feedback is welcomed, I was born to be a storyteller and give viewers something to enjoy and laugh with. I am very hands-on with everything I do, with ” Crystal”, I wore a lot of hats and never forgot I am an artist first. So, visually you can see that through the episodes, details are important, even the small ones. My art is always in the background keeping me safe.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to put your work out there. And not just online, I mean to submit to festivals. Rejection is going to happen, that’s life, so don’t let that get to you. We have been doing the film festival run for almost two years and it’s coming close to the end, I am so grateful to everyone and being able to share my project. Grow as a filmmaker make new friendships along the way. And when you do get into festivals, go to everything! Talk to everyone and be inspired. It has simple as showing up – you have to be your biggest fan, first.
