Today we’d like to introduce you to Cloe Lane.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cloe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Bon Puf started from my childhood love of cotton candy. I grew up loving the classic confection! Fast forward to high school, I thought it was interesting that you couldn’t rent a cute modern cotton candy cart for events and from there the idea for Bon Puf was born. After graduating, I traveled, worked a few odd jobs, saved some seed money for starting my business, and went to community college. That spring, I worked hard to learn how to use a cotton candy machine, created my own original organic flavors and got my custom cart made. I debuted Bon Puf at Unique LA’s 2013 Summer Show! Since then, I have worked hard to grow Bon Puf and it has been amazing to be a part of Los Angeles’s culinary and events industry. We were the first to create a custom cotton candy dessert cart for events and the first to create artisanal organic cotton candy flavors with toppings! While we specialize in cotton candy cart service, we also have an online shop where you can buy our cotton candy packaged in cute tubs and delivered straight to your door. We are excited to grow that side of Bon Puf and see what is ahead as we continue to grow!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth, rather bumpy really! Anytime you cross into uncharted territory (in this case creating a business that hadn’t yet existed — a modern cotton candy catering company, there are bound to be many failures and seasons of difficulty. One struggle, in particular, has been doing our best to maintain the small-scale, specialty niche of our business while at the same time being able to accommodate the demand for our services. We have always valued quality over fast growth so our priority is taking care of our customers and providing the very best service. That being said, we are always setting goals and taking realistic steps towards them. Starting and running Bon Puf has been an amazing learning experience and usually when you are learning and growing the most you are being stretched out of your comfort zone. My advice is to constantly evaluate what your next step forward could be and get ready to work hard.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bon Puf – what should we know?
I am most proud of our flavor creations and how we have developed our pre-made packaging. I sometimes laugh at the fact that I chose one of the most difficult food items to package in the world! If you have ever experienced cotton candy on a humid day you know why! I am so proud of our original flavors. A lot of love and time went into creating them and it always delights me when people find out that cotton candy doesn’t just have to be pink flavored!! Mango Chile, Salted Caramel, Lychee Green Tea, Vanillafetti, Chai Tea and Strawberry Lemonade are some of our most popular handcrafted flavors!
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel incredibly fortunate and blessed to be a female business owner. While there are many challenges still to address, I am so proud to be one of many many hard-working women in this day and age that were able to turn their dreams and ideas into functioning lifestyles and careers. Women are powerful consumers so it was only natural that women would start harnessing this knowledge and start making businesses that cater to their fellow friends, moms, sisters. What a privilege, one I do not take for granted.
