Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantelle Brown.
Chantelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Seaside, a small town in Northern California. I always felt like I was different from my peers, I wanted more, I always saw a bigger picture for myself. After graduating from high school and struggle to keep interest in community college, I decided I needed a change of pace. I took the leap of faith in 2016 to chase my dreams of becoming a successful makeup artist. Makeup and beauty, in general, was always my passion, but the opportunity back home was slim. I attended MUD makeup school and had the time of my life learning the ins and outs of everything beauty. After graduating and working as MUA, I still felt like I wasn’t truly fulfilling my passion. Growing up as a bigger girl the idea of being a model was comical, I knew being double-digit size would never make it. Through the years of schooling and dealing with my own body image, I noticed the world of modeling shifting and started to see models that looked exactly like me. The hope of being a model as a young woman sparked up again, I saw the chance for me to do what I only dreamed of. I went for it, connected with photographers that believed in my vision and literally dove head first into modeling. I started out slow, building up a portfolio, setting up small shoots and it quickly turned into brands noticing me and offering me work. Being on set as a makeup artist was fun but as the model, I felt so fulfilled. I wish I would have been more confident in the past because there are women out there I’ve already touched and inspired. That tells me I found my purpose and I plan to continue to push myself to not only work hard for myself but to continue to inspire others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If anybody says the road to success was all smooth they’re absolutely lying. A lot of my struggle came from myself, the anxiety and self-doubt while trying to find my purpose. I didn’t believe myself when I should have and I let a fear of failure get in the way of a lot of good opportunities that were presented to me. My word of advice would be very cliche but 100% true, trust the process. You have to believe in where you are going and actually, stick with it. Success isn’t overnight and it doesn’t build by itself. You will face many moments where you think there’s no light at the end of the tunnel but trust that there is. I wish someone had told me to just relax, stop stressing over my paths timeline.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I am currently a plus-size model and still do makeup. I specialize in natural glam makeup and “no makeup” makeup, I always felt makeup should enhance existing beauty not alter it completely. I am most proud of the recent modeling I have been doing it because I am still new to the industry and I feel like I have accomplished a lot I’m proud of. I think what sets me apart is my message behind my purpose is different. My message is not only about loving your body but it’s about being your true authentic self no matter what shape or size you are. You can be a bigger girl and still slay just as hard as anybody else.
