Meet Trailblazer Candice Blaauw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Blaauw.

Candice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been in the hair industry for about 9 years now. I attended Citrus College – Cosmetology. I was recognized as the woman of the year. I started off as an assistant working with some amazing women. One in particular who I completely looked up to who ended up being my mentor, Alixandra Lopez, I will always be so grateful for her showing me her ways!

I am currently working at Union Salon in Pasadena, who has been my family for a little over six years. I feel super blessed to be a part of the union team. I would say, I’m an all around educated stylist & I continue to learn & take classes. I focus mostly on color, I guess you could say I’m known for doing blondes, which is something I’ve always been passionate about. One of the things that motivate me every day is how exciting it is to go to work. Every day is a new day, it’s a different experience. That’s very exciting to walk in the salon and not know who you’re going to get, what you’re going to do and to be able to achieve the look that somebody is desiring is so fulfilling. The fact that I am capable of making somebody feel so good about themselves and watching how happy they look when they see their hair and that confidence that you’re able to give somebody within a couple hours, it’s just a really good feeling. I love what I do and doing what makes you happy doesn’t feel like a job. I remember my father was so against me doing hair, he said: “that’s not a career that’s a hobby”… with hard work and dedication my “hobby” is my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a single mother working and taking care of my son alone was so hard to do. I dedicated so many long nights working, building. The struggle to success takes hard work and dedication and nothing is handed to you-you have to work for everything. And it might not happen overnight, but when you get where you want to be, it’s the best feeling ever.

We’d love to hear more about Union Salon.
My main focus is mostly color. I specialize in doing blonde color. I feel like blonde is not easy to do not everybody can achieve certain looks. I’ve put a lot of time into figuring out what works and what doesn’t work.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t give up, write down your goals create that checklist and if something doesn’t work out try a different route.

Not everything is gonna work out the way you want it too but when one door closes another one always opens, take chances!

Don’t hesitate on doing something because you might feel silly or if you’re worried about what other people are gonna think about you. Do you… literally!!!

But be careful, don’t let your ego take over always stay humble and remember, everyone starts at the bottom and work their way to the top!
