Meet Tracy Ann and Kelly Deco of Knowrealitypie in Eagle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Ann and Kelly Deco.

Tracy and Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are a tiny, artisan, gourmet, hand-crafted, single award-winning pie shop in Los Angeles, located in Eagle Rock, CA. We began as a pop-up at a nearby restaurant, and quickly outgrew that location due to demand. We entered the KCRW Pie Contest two years in a row, sweeping multiple awards for our Triple Berry Cabernet, Berries Gone Wild, Sweet Potato Cornbread, Sea Salt Caramel Mango Rum Passion, and Butterscotch Espresso Pecan in addition to Best Crust! We opened a tiny storefront in Eagle Rock, and business has been booming ever since. We cater to movie studios, weddings, parties, and recently purchased pie production equipment to help us meet our growing demand. We provide pies weekly to Max City BBQ by the slice, and our shop is currently open weekends. We hope to open additional weekdays soon. We are on the list of the 14 Pies To Have Before You Die in the Los Angeles Times, 16 Best Pies in LA, Most Unsung Pie Shop in LA, amongst several others in Time Out LA and Pasadena Now. We were named by Conde Nast as “The” Pie Shop to visit when traveling through Los Angeles! We regularly sell out every time we are open, and fill the shop with hundreds of pies at a time both Saturday and Sunday. We had a record number of Thanksgiving Pie orders this year, opening orders October 1 and at several hundred capacities by October 31. The name “Knowrealitypie” is a fusion of my fiance’s music video produced by Wayne White, No Reality, and my passion for pie, and that people just don’t “know” what really good pie is these days.

Has it been a smooth road?
Turning a hobby/passion into a business has not been without bumps. As our demand and popularity grew so quickly, we simply found it extremely challenging to keep up with that demand. We have provided pies for Katy Perry’s recent music release “Bon Appetit” for Capitol Records, and for Oprah Winfrey/Meryl Streep’s Writer’s Lab Outloud in Hollywood last month. We will not compromise quality for quantity, so we have had to close our shop occasionally to participate in these events which request our pies specifically. All of our pies are made primarily by my hands to ensure each one is of the highest quality. We are not factory driven nor do we have multiple locations. We are more interested in offering folks uniquely flavored and traditional pies of the absolute best ingredients and highest quality. Our pie business is also a legacy to my late mother, a wonderful pie baker, who became ill and taught me her trade secrets before passing away untimely from Cancer. Those recipes are what we base our pie flavors on, with a little help from our own combined creativity. My fiance manages the business side, is the shop pie “roadie” and I focus on crafting the pies and the pie flavors. It takes both of us to make our business work and there are many long, long hours and personal sacrifices we make in order to keep everything running smoothly. For instance, particularly with Thanksgiving, we forego Thanksgiving Dinner/Celebration with our families who are not local, so that we can bake the hundreds of pies ordered for others. We are happy to do this but it does take a toll, and will necessitate a little break soon!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are the only Los Angeles Double Award-Winning Pie Company, offering personal pies in two sizes, which are the most popular items in our shop. We take whole pies by pre-order. Our specialties are our Triple Berry Cabernet, and Sea Salt Caramel Mango Rum Passion, and this plus the fact that we are not factory made or driven, is what sets us apart from the other pie shops here. Additionally, we have won awards for Best Crust in Los Angeles, and our patrons continually comment that they love our crust! We are proud of how far we have come, and appreciate all of our regular customers who continually support our small business – and our fan base continues to grow. We love the smile our pies bring to those who have never tried them before, and the smiles our pies bring to our loyal returning customers who find comfort the same quality pie, again and again, especially in this age of difficulty and uncertainty. We have so many orders for delivery of our pies to those who are sick or in need, as birthday gifts, and to those have lost someone special and need that kind of pie comfort, as well as for happy occasions such as weddings and births. We are very proud to be a part of so many of our patron’s life celebrations and occasions. We have tried all of the other pies here in Los Angeles, and it is our opinion that the pies are okay, but we believe that folks will have the best pie experience once they taste our pies. We are working on bringing something new and unique to Los Angeles that no other pie shop here has – we can’t tell you what that is just yet, but big things are happening for Knowrealitypie – stay tuned!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
