Meet Traci Steenburgen of Gloss Makeup Artistry in Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Steenburgen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story?
I moved from LA back to Spokane, WA in 2002, where I quickly learned there wasn’t a lot of job opportunities in the PNW. So, my love for making people feel and look good – turned into a business. I opened up my tanning salon, Coconutz Tanning Spa, over 13 years ago. My salon has been so much fun to run and has been a successful business for me. That love for making people feel beautiful expanded into makeup. Who doesn’t love makeup? I formed my makeup business, Gloss Makeup Artistry, and quickly it became a success! For past 5 years, I primarily did bridal and boudoir makeup. I specialize in the airbrush technique, however, I can do traditional application as well. I recently returned to the South Bay and am focused on building my clientele here. My industry is all referral based, so it takes time to build. I just do makeup and spray tans, and love it!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving back to the South Bay – it has been a challenge to get busy. My industry is all referral based and not a lot of people know me. Yet. But, I’m working on building my clientele through social media, reaching out to Photographers and other Makeup Artists have helped.

Gloss Makeup Artistry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in airbrush makeup. It’s flawless, water-proof and gorgeous in pictures. I’ve been published many times in local magazines, and online. I think what really separates me apart from others is my worth ethic. I show up early. I stay as late as needed. I’ve never canceled on anyone in my life :). I calm a bride’s nerves when needed. I’m extremely personable and I enjoy my work.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is enjoying what you do while making a profit from it. Being able to pick and choose your work, rather than taking everything that comes your way. I have two young children and being available for them, vs. a 9-5 job is rewarding.
