Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Troop.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The irony is I started Interior Design school to creatively fill my time while I was a stay-at-home mom for our two school-age children.
Once I completed my degree, my intention was to supplement my mom-time with manageable residential design projects that worked within my schedule. Within two years, not only was I working on a ground-up, oceanfront project but freelancing 2-3 days a week for a busy interior design firm. Ha! “Best-laid plans” became THE plan that has sustained me for many years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been a smooth, FUN road with interesting people and creative projects. Like so many others, 2008-09 was a slow period in our industry, so it took time to rebuild relationships and gradually take on more and more projects of my own. While I still welcome freelance work, there has been less time for it in the last few years.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is all about my clients. I listen and observe with a tremendous focus on not only the design vision but how the design will influence my client’s daily life. My goal is to create timeless living environments for them by integrating function with style and sophistication. My clients often comment on my recall and implementation to fulfill their needs and wishes expressed many months before.
I am extremely proud that I have a sustainable business in its 19th year and can call each client a friend! Other memorable highlights: a featured home in the ASID Pasadena 2012 Home Tour, and recently receiving the ASID Orange County 2016 Platinum Award for a Home Under 3,500 SF.
My core belief is that having stimulating, nurturing surroundings is an essential part of life. Beauty, however one defines it, feeds the soul and helps us all function at our best. Thoughtful design can elevate the human spirit. My love and passion for design flourish from my approach to identify what my clients find beautiful and infuse my designs with their unique style.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a little shy, and always observant of others. My mother and grandmother taught me to sew (which didn’t stick!), but the experience of creating a whole from disconnected parts was fun and gratifying. Later when I worked in retail it was always in fashion where I enjoyed color, patterns, textures and the whole mix.
