Today we’d like to introduce you to Tosin Aribisala.
Tosin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My musical journey started from my childhood days in Nigeria, where I was born. I started performing with my high school choir, then moved up the ladder playing the drum set with professional bands. This led to international tours, recordings and teaching gigs. After moving to the United States in 2001, I went further in my musical studies and exploits by taking some courses in music theory in addition to earning a B.A. in Business Management at the University of Maryland University College. Besides playing the drum set, I also play guitar and piano, which allows me to compose and write instrumental arrangements to my songs. With these abilities, I have produced four albums and a few singles of my own. The latest of my albums is titled Afrika Rising under Ropeadope Records.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been a smooth one. One of the main challenges is being an independent artist. It’s like sole-proprietorship. You are responsible for the funding of your own project, recruiting the talents, booking shows, and handling all the managerial aspects. In spite of the challenges, the fact that it is what I love to do with my time and brain makes it all fun, with some inner-rewards and fulfillment.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe success is that subtle thing that cannot be quantified and pointed at physically, not necessarily having huge figures. It is that feeling of fulfillment that you are able to make some impact with what you do. It doesn’t matter if 1000 people came to your show or ten people. What matters is that you are able to get out there and do what you love. Some people’s ideas don’t even go beyond their rooms or studio. Lastly, consistency is success. If you can manage to keep up with your skills and output for ten years in these challenging times and rapidly changing technologies, then you are successful.
