Meet Torrey Henry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Torrey Henry.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Graduated from Western International High School a four sport athlete (Basketball, Cross Country, Track & Field, Volleyball) with a 3.90 GPA. I furthered my education at Grand Valley State where I received my Bachelors of Science in Physical Education and Minor in Business. Wanting to continue my educational journey, I went to Wayne State University, where I received my Masters of Arts degree at the age of 24. After college, I worked as an Operations Manager for the Volunteers, Administrators, and Coaches (VAC) Program where I was the Operations Manager for five years while substitute teaching in the Detroit Public School System at the same time. I then furthered my career and became a Dean of Students at Detroit Cristo Rey from 2014-2020. With all the valuable experience and hard work from the educational field, I decided to transition into music a long life passion of mine. I recently in 2020 started my own brand /business Cool Cocky Confident LLC. I have released three singles “Good Vibes” (2020) “Oh Fa Real” (2020) “49 Reasons” (2020) and my first official album “Liter of Love” (2021).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say smooth road, because every journey has its bumps but the road has been good. I grew up in a single parent household with one of the hardest working, dedicated, and loving mothers ever. So one thing I had to learn is how to be a good son and also be the man of the house the best way I knew how. Financially there were ups and downs but my mother always provided. As I got older and into my profession, I can say some of the struggles were trying to make sure the youth are instilled with confidence because some have backgrounds that don’t promote positive affirmations. Also working with people sometimes who don’t understand the culture where they work. Personally, trying to make sure that I am an example of success for my family, friends, and those extremely close to me. And of course in the times we are in now with the pandemic, another struggle is staying positive, optimistic, and maintaining a high level of sanity in these dark times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Previously, I worked in education. Started off as a substitute teacher and eventually became a school administrator. While teaching, I focused on Physical Education, English, and Creative Writing. While in education whether teaching or being a school administrator, I was known for being stern but understanding. Also holding students accountable, but consistently giving positive reinforcement, and promoting self-confidence. I’m most proud of the lives I changed, my former students who are in college, in their careers, and pursuing their dreams and them telling me they appreciate my work, and I contributed to their success. Now I have my own company/brand Cool Cocky Confident. I record, write and produce music. My brand’s whole focus is to make music that makes individuals believe in themselves. The goal is to give people a smooth sound with clever lyrics that promote positive affirmations. I’m most proud of my leap of faith to transition from one profession to the next. I’m also proud that my music is 100% authentic. It’s my story and who I am as a person.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The music business/industry is always changing. The next 5-10 years, I see my industry bigger and better. I see myself making a huge impact in music culture and in people’s lives. I see more lucrative businesses that will be established. I see the music industry continuing to influence the world. I believe the music business will have a high number of entrepreneurs. The music business/industry has always changed and set new trends every 5-10 years, sometimes even quicker so I know it will continue to evolve.
