Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia. Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Claudia.
Claudia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hair has allowed me to express my creativity. It is the medium I use to enhance my guest’s image, and in this humble way, contribute in their lives. It wasn’t always like that though. When I was in high school, I took an internship at an office. They had me organize and file away documents, make phone calls most of the day, and my least favorite task, notify clients that their application had not been approved, and although, previous to that, I thought that, I wanted to work in an office for the rest of my life, it really wasn’t what I wanted. After a few years in college with not much direction I decided to go for my Cosmetology License.
Cosmetology school is not easy, but guess what?
I LOVED IT!!! You see… I love working with people! Creating, doing, seeing the end result, and the fact that their eyes have a little sparkle when they see themselves with a new do, is really rewarding, and I’d like to believe that I build relationships this way, as well. What else can I ask for?
Has it been a smooth road?
There are bumps along the way all the time. The Beauty industry is very competitive and sadly, very superficial, specially the Makeup world. After having done hair for a number of years, I decided to go to Makeup School. It wasn’t a surprise to me, that I would encounter big egos, but to find myself among unfriendly people, surrounded by gossiping and alienation? It was a bit much. I was sailing rough waters at the time, and I realized that people don’t seem to want to see, past their noses, nor do they care to find out if everyone is doing okay. Everyone is too busy putting false lashes on, to care for each other. To actually notice if anyone is in need of any help, is basically asking too much. I finished, with Perfect Attendance and was able to book jobs straight away, so much so, that I was unable to attend my graduation ceremony! This is a tough industry to be in, but you have to learn to put all that aside and continue to do what it is that you love. The knowledge on hair is extensive. I have tried to conquer different aspects of it throughout the years, whether it’s been styling and finishing, or Hair coloring, Hair designing. I enjoy it all.
What are your plans for the future?
My most immediate plans are to get my Barbering License. Up until now, I have been concentrating my efforts mostly on the women’s side of hair. I do Men’s haircuts, but Barbering is a whole new level, and I want to learn to do it properly. I am hoping to be done within the year. My next goal will be to bring more gentlemen into the salon, and all along, has been to open my own place. I would love to have my own space and as well as servicing guests, I would love to use it to teach!
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
The most recent couple of years have been particularly challenging. We had two deaths in the family. My beloved kitty who was like my child, also passed away after so much suffering, and I lost who I thought was my best friend thru a very sad divorce. And, although I absolutely tried for it all to not affect my business, it did. I have been trying to stay busy, trying to exceed my client’s expectations, keeping up with the latest trends, and trying to take care of my own needs as best I can. It has not been easy, but I am now, in a place where I can see it all being part of the past, it is finally not affecting me as much, and I now, feel that I’m back to take charge of my career, as I was, before all this happened.
