Meet Tonya Meeks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Meeks.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a sober, single momma by choice, artist that created an event called Sparrowland that foster community Abbot Kinney, artist development & production, & conscious living. I was a depth psychotherapist that shifted my focus to my one woman show Flying Standby that toured NYC Off Broadway. I have decided to commit to my craft as an artist producing work & performing while creating this performing arts program.

I love performing & want to model that artist thrive & Art Heals to my son Sparrow. He has been my inspiration & he is in my new show – it’s an adult performance art piece – slice between reality TV & theatre. It’s live, adventure that changes each time. The performance are once monthly.

Please tell us about your art.
I hope that people take away the ability to see themselves as story tellers & assist other in launching & sharing their stories in whatever medium fits them – theatre, writing, dance, voice, & etc. I did my academic Master Thesis at Pacifica Graduate Institute at on the idea that art is a possession that heals. I have been sober 14 years & also now addiction can be a possession and the healthy outlet of this possession can be the muse of being the flow of creating. I believe we are all creative and meant to be creating.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Yes, come to the show. Submit to be part of the next event. Share your art. Schedule time for coffee / tea / cocoa with fellow working artists.
