Meet Tonya Kay of Tonya Kay’s Pinup Pole Show in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Kay.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We, as creative artists, put so much of our talent into other peoples’ projects … at a certain point, you gotta bring your own ideas to life!

I’ve performed on Broadway, blockbuster films, sold out Madison Square Garden two nights in a row and now my television acting career is shaping quite nicely. So the creative prowess it took to create Tonya Kay’s Pinup Pole Show had been trained, you could say, for decades. My first full-length production was Xtreme Rhythm Theatre. But by adding a classic car show, live rockabilly band, pinup art show, photographers and models to my new 75 min production, I took producing to another level. This sh*t ain’t easy!

Thank goodness I graduated Valedictorian – got the smarts and the drive from my parents. I even tested out my business aptitude by owning and operating two successful movie-industry service companies before trying my hand with Tonya Kay’s Pinup Pole Show.

But creativity and business smarts don’t a successful, long-term production make. You gotta have community. I’m proud to say that my supporters came together and donated $10K via an IndieGoGo campaign to fund the upstart of Tonya Kay’s Pinup Pole Show, which I’m excited to say we’ve now “paid back” threefold in content, production-value and good ol’ fun. Community is everything.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I learn something new every time the show goes up. In other words, I have sh*t go wrong every show and have the opportunity to learn from it. Haha.

I’ve learned what it’s like to have to refund tickets, have your classic car owners pull dangerous burnouts in the cruise-in lot, replace a cast member last minute, what a difference the right ticketing company makes (Passage Ticketing, btw).

Something I had heard about branding, but didn’t experience until this year was that it takes 3-5 years for your brand to root in social consciousness. Well, we may actually be ahead of that curve, because in year 3 here, finally Tonya Kay’s Pinup Pole Show is drawing attention of out of nowhere. Magazines, venues, sponsors, clients are calling ME. And that feels like brand. Because for the first 2 years, I was the one cold calling. I was hustling hard to get anyone to cover us or come on board, but time really has changed that already!
