Meet Toneylynn Papa of Darling Daydream in West Covina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toneylynn Papa.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My calligraphy journey started back in 2015, I used to work on cruise ships and felt like I needed a new hobby that was going to be easy to travel with. This was around the time that everyone else was really into coloring. As much as I tried to like coloring, I just couldn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else was and felt like I needed to find something else to pass the time.

I originally started just trying to teach myself how to do calligraphy with photos on Pinterest I would try to recreate, without much luck. Eventually, I found a local workshop for Modern Calligraphy by Julia Mattox of Luminous Lines. This was an absolute game changer for me because I finally had all of the tools I needed to start my own calligraphy journey.

Since taking that class, I have continued to practice on my own with the dip pen style I originally learned, as well as brush lettering and even iPad lettering that I mostly do now.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road to get to where I am now. My biggest struggle has been self-doubt.

From the beginning, I found that I have always been the one standing in my own way. I have known for a while that I wanted to pursue calligraphy a little bit further, but the fear of not being “good enough” had always stopped me from trying.

However, after realizing that there isn’t much else, I’d rather be doing, I’ve been able to slowly come out of my shell and give myself the chance I deserve. Journaling, listening to podcasts and the never-ending support from those around me have been the number one way I’ve been able to keep my head nice and clear for this crazy journey of mine.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Darling Daydream – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Darling Daydream offers paper goods and gifts created to inspire. Everything features my own hand lettering work and has quotes about kindness and positivity, with just a little bit of sass for balance.

I make a variety of paper goods such as greeting cards and prints, as well as makeup bags, tote bags, mugs, and vinyl stickers. The assortment grows all the time.

I am very picky about the quotes and phrases I feature on any of my products. I believe this is what sets me apart from others.

I truly believe in the power of positive thinking and want to share the benefit of that with those around me.

A little kindness does, in fact, go a very long way and I want to make sure I do my part in making it a little easier to spread that kindness around.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
There are so many things I want to accomplish in the future. However, my biggest goals are launching my very own calligraphy/hand lettering workshop and also doing more large scale events like weddings and parties. I would also love to see my cards and prints being sold in stationery shops all over the country.
