Meet Todd Zack Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Zack Jr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I feel like now is a time when vulnerability often tends to be frowned upon & transparency is key. I introduce myself as a true R&B/Soul presence. I’m influenced by  by artists ranging from Donny Hathaway to Dom Kennedy, just being inspired by so many things and sounds. Being a 28-year old singer/songwriter/producer, I showcase my sound/lifestyle via lyrical versatility complimented by my vocal range and quality production. I’m originally from Elyria, Ohio (E-leer-e-uh), a small city 25 minutes northeast of Cleveland, OH. I pride myself on my work ethic & dedication, in addition to resiliency.

As a child, I endured my father being wrongfully convicted & sent to prison for 10 1/2 years (from age 8-18), which forced me to grow up faster than a normal kid would. At 19, I went on to serve as an Active Duty member of the U.S. Air Force for six 1/2 years as an Intelligence Analyst, while creating music in the majority of my downtime. This led to making the decision to bet on myself, to pursue music full-time February 2017. I view music from my point of view as raw, organic offerings to the world, taking you on a trip sonically, while incorporating innovative elements within the R&B/Soul genres.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, but I honestly wouldn’t want it easy! The struggles helped me boss it all up creatively & as a man. I remember attempting to balance music & the military, and at one point my mental health was low due to the inability to move/express myself due to military constraints. Upon getting out in 2017, I’ve experienced financial lows, loss of relationships, and low points of isolation. Nonetheless, I’ve always had this fuel in me to keep going. I no longer let financial hardships stress me out because in reality you’re not broke if you prioritize bills and your goals over frivolous purchases and negative situations, so it was important I began to establish a better sense of self-care/appreciation. It’s like I’ve honed the ability to put things into perspective, be thankful for where I’ve been/headed, and just keep going.

Tell us about your work – what should we know?
I’m a singer/songwriter/producer (triple threat lol). I focus on making music that serves as a very visual audio. From the sounds, I select when I make beats, to the storytelling within the concept of the song, to the vocal approach. All three make the music take you on a trip and visualize. I can make all types of sounds too, from R&B/Soul, to Dancehall and Hip-Hop/Trap types, due to having a theory background. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve always stayed the course when it comes to being a vessel within R&B/Soul music. I never stray away from being that staple in the community/industry that really stands by what R&B was/is today. I move honorably within business and life, treating people with the utmost respect at all times. I think being from Ohio, learning how to adapt within the military, and have experienced many highs and lows help make me a 1 of 1 in this business.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Transparency. In life, I watched things get bad for myself closing out 2018. I looked around and felt like my energy was being spread so thin from family to friends and other negative situations, that I almost had a nervous breakdown. I didn’t wanna be the guy to let people down, despite my omissions and lack of true honesty. By getting over this, I stressed WAY less and dove into new things creatively. By being transparent, it allows the sound, the lyrics, and the artist to be perceived in a true fashion, as to the fabrication we often see in various industries via creatives.
