Meet Roxanne Sanchez of Tlali in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Sanchez.

Roxanne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I spent my summers in Santa Cruz and winters in Mexico. I would spend most of my time while in L.A. walking around photographing it all if I wasn’t painting or making clothing. Coming from a Family of Artists and Makers naturally I always knew what I wanted to do from a very young age of 6 when my Artist sister handed me my first oil set. Studied Art, Fashion & Design, Photography and Theatre in High School and College. Expressing my feelings in my Art. All my artwork is inspired by Surrealism and I also make Op Art merch. Creator and one woman of Tlali. I just started selling my Handcrafted Rose Water Spray that is CBD Infused. Which was inspired by my parents. The Chayo Dress which was named after my mother. I also sell New, Vintage, Wearable Art, Home Decor and Accessories. From time to time taking custom orders. Tlali is an expression of my life and culture. Creative & Marketing Director, Vegan Cook, and more for Delicias Bakery And Some in Highland Park, Los Angeles. I illustrate the artwork for all the merchandise and run the social media pages and more. Recently started a small vegan catering company named Ayotli Vegan. Cooking only foods inspired by my roots.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. Being first generation born in Los Angeles was tough but I can say I had all forms of Art help me grow. I was heavily bullied all throughout my school years. It pushed me deeper into creating. My mother got very sick when I was a teen and I can say it was what pushed me to learn how to cook the right way. At the age of 18, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which made the road a bit more bumpier. I’ve always had poor eyesight having to wear glasses and contacts knowing someday I’d possibly loose my sight. Beginning of 2018, I developed a sudden loss of my right eyesight and it sharpened my inner vision. I started seeing things differently again. Currently running my businesses while still working a full-time job also isn’t easy.

Tlali – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I sell prints, pins and stickers of my artwork and photography all on my website and open for commissions and freelance. All prints on Tlali are printed by my partner Jesse Samaniego of Rising Vision using eco-friendly inks which makes them much more special to me. My handcrafted Rose Waters are poured when purchased. CBD Infused making them one of the first very few of this blend around.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is when I got interviewed for Delicias Bakery And Some and they covered Delicias being the first Vegan Bakery in Los Angeles. Not once but twice. I was determined to make Delicias the first vegan bakery here in L.A. and do all I can to help and it happened. I still am proudly creating new recipes for the bakery while doing lots more.
