Meet Tilomai Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tilomai Hill.

Tilomai, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Samoan/Caucasian Makeup Artist based in Los Angeles, CA. I was born & raised in a small town with a big heart, Laie, Hawaii. My love & passion for makeup started in Hawaii, as a Polynesian performer traveling the world & sharing the culture of my Polynesian heritage. I was raised in a family of Entertainers & watching my mother, Aunts & cousins getting ready for performances was the highlight of my upbringing. In the midst of all that, I started experimenting in makeup & all things beauty. Which led me to start doing makeup for weddings, prom &, etc. in small town Laie. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles that I fell into an industry that allowed me to not only get paid to do what I loved but meet some amazing individuals that opened the door & mentored me along the way. Now, I have to the pleasure of working with some of the biggest artists in the industry that I grew up watching on TV, which I’m beyond grateful for everyday.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Over the years, I have struggled with a lot of insecurity & anxiety, Especially as a growing creative in the Entertainment/Beauty Industry. Being from a small country town in Hawaii to moving to Los Angeles 10 yrs ago, it was a big shift in life with a lot of questions. Many of those uneasy questions stemmed from not knowing anything about the industry or anyone. Gratefully, I owe all my continued success to my family & my hometown Laie for the foundation that I was raised with. Also, I have so much gratitude for those individuals who took a chance on me & believed in me & my journey.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I am a makeup artist that specializes in all things makeup, beauty & grooming for any occasion. A lot of my work can be found on many music videos for Anderson. Paak, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, Tyga, Tenelle, Love & Hiphop Season 6 just to name of few. What I am most proud of can also relate to what sets me apart from others, which is SERVICE. I pride myself creating a relaxed, safe & comfortable environment for all my clients. From a celebrity to a bride, I treat & serve all my clients with the same love & respect across the board. I love what I do, I love being able to be of service & help all my clients feel their best selves.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see my industry growing in drastic ways. With social media being one of our leading ways of booking/work, it’s amazing how many opportunities have opened up for everyone. It’s a blessing that we have so many avenues to share our talents & showcase our creativity.
