Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Holliday.
Theresa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Certified Pilates instructor through the Pilates Sports Center. I worked in the film entertainment industry for more than a decade doing physical manual labor, causing lower back pain- that is why I turned to Pilates. I am experienced in aiding in the recovery, as well as overall body health and strength. I am passionate about teaching and love helping clients’ progress towards achieving their goals. I am committed and patient. I do my best to keep the Pilates fun whether teaching private or group classes. There are many different apparatus to use while train Pilates and I am certified with them all: Mat Work, Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Pre-Post Natal and Cardio Jump Board. In addition to working in the film industry, I have 15 years of experience as a Black Belt instructor and also Certified Referee, Teaching and training a wide range of age groups from young to more senior. I was born and raised in Venice, California. I have been an active surfer and surfing instructor for 15 years as well. I am very experienced in cross training with a variety of sports including Volleyball. I became certified as a personal trainer to broaden my horizons. I have recovered from many injuries, including lower back injuries without any surgeries. Many injuries or body pain can be healed through proper exercise, and I love to help people find a natural way to heal their bodies.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a challenge. Before Pilates- while working in the film industry- I was moving lots of heavy objects and wearing a heavy tool belt with a walkie. As many people realize- especially if you work in the industry on set- you are usually working 12-18 hour days on very little sleep, and everything is always done in a hurry. One day, I calculated the total weight I was moving around, and I was shocked to see it was about 1,000 lbs. a day! Eventually, my back had a laundry list of problems and I didn’t want anyone to know that I couldn’t work. The Doctor said I needed surgery, which is a slippery slope, and not the answer I was interested in. The only answer for me was that I had to change my whole life. All the years I have taught has always been my passion and side work. It was time to switch gears and turn my side passion into my career with a leap of faith!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dream Body Pilates story. Tell us more about the business.
Since I have first-handedly recovered from many injuries, I understand how to help others on their path to recovery. I have always been a strong athlete, and am well versed in how to provide a great challenge to the elite athlete. I pay attention to detail and show my clients that I care about helping them with whatever their goals are. I have a portable business, teaching out of many different locations around the city. I also have equipment that I bring with me to work with clients wherever they can meet- whether it in their office, at the park, or at their home.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the need for fitness will only be greater. I will expand in the next years as well. I hope to open a solid location and still remain portable. I also will be putting together group retreats and seminars. Eventually a certification program is in the future.
