Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Popkow.
Nikki , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love of Musical Theater and Old Hollywood Glamour got me into the interest of the beauty industry at a young age. As I grew older so did my excitement for all things creature, character, fantasy, and beauty. I’m currently working in a salon in West Hollywood and also I am actively freelancing on different sets doing beauty, creature creations, and gore.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been lucky to keep my hands full with work, but unfortunately it doesn’t always pay the bills. I’m at a point in my career where I am still building my portfolio and am still reaching for all my goals. Working a lot of nonhair and makeup gigs, like bartending, is something that I am still currently doing to keep a roof over my head and my kit stocked.
What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
Hands down, Shane Lopes. Shane is an absolutely wonderful human being and a very talented photographer that I have had the pleasure of working with solidly for the past few years. We’ve done tons of shoots ranging from Ecom to test shoots to headshots to our own personal passion projects. He’s brought me on board so many times and it’s been just wonderful to see our work and talent grow. He is the bomb,
Do you have a favorite type of client or project?
In addition to bridal beauty, working in a salon in West Hollywood and logging tons of on set hours, I’m a returning make up artist at Six Flags Magic Mountain for their Fright Fest even under the supervision of Scott Ramp and the Scream Team. I absolutely LOVE working this event! Not only am I making zombies and creatures for 7 weeks in a row, but the whole team is like a blooming family. It’s such a wonderful feeling to return every year and see faces that you haven’t seen all year but can’t wait to work together.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I would’ve started earlier, for sure! I’m 34 now and I believe if I had started in my 20’s I would have accomplished so much more by this time.
