Today we’d like to introduce you to Tevin Scott.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So I could get super deep and talk about how these days I’m slowly discovering that this journey began way before I even knew, but to keep things simple I’ll say I really got started at THE MECCA – Howard University. My college years were when I really got serious about filmmaking/comedy and started to see that this was my calling. I made several short films that gained a lot of buzz on campus and during the summers, I’d come out to LA and intern. So by the time I graduated, I had several connections that helped me start getting work out here. My first real gig was working in the writer’s room of BET’s HBCU drama “The Quad,” then I worked on HBO’s Insecure after winning their “on set” contest with my partner Rome. That opportunity prepared us to make my latest short, “TASTE OF THE MECCA,” which we’ve been having several pop up screenings in LA for. And now we’re currently pitching my original HBCU series, THE MECCA to networks so it’s really been a full-circle experience that just keeps going. My steps have truly been divinely ordered.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
HELL NO! This has been one long, wild, bumpy roller coaster ride filled with twist and turns and it just doesn’t stop! But that’s life. I’m just happy there’s been a lot of thrills in between. The struggles I’ve experienced have been so crazy you’d have to see it to believe it. And y’all will definitely see it. I’m already working on my second project which chronicles every struggle I’ve experienced since moving to LA and trying to make it in Hollywood. Until then, I’ll just say that I done seen it all. Just like Nipsey said, I’ve experienced every emotion tryna pursue this. And by the way things are headed, pretty soon I’ll have the platform to begin sharing my struggles with the world on a larger scale.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Raise The Stakes Entertainment – what should we know?
I have a film production company called Raise The Stakes Entertainment, and we strive to do exactly what the name implies. We tell authentic stories for the culture and we aim to do it in ways that we haven’t seen before. Our specialty is comedy. We have ten short films and an 8 episode web series under our belt and we’re really just getting started. In rap terms, we’re like a dope underground label that just needs that one hit to break into the mainstream. It’s on the way.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity. That’s it.
