Meet Terri Burris of Terri Burris Art in West Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terri Burris.

Terri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Hermosa Beach, California. The time I spent as a child on the sand and in the ocean-influenced my life and art in profound ways. If I wasn’t on the beach, you could find me in my home working on a variety of art projects. I was lucky to live next to two wonderful artists who took me under their wing and taught me about painting and introduced me to new mediums including pottery, linoleum block printing and collage. Those experiences at a young age helped shape my decision to pursue art as a lifelong career.

After studying art in school, I worked professionally as a graphic designer for various companies such as Small World Greetings and Disney. Although I enjoyed working in graphic design, I found myself gravitating toward fine art, which continues to be my main focus today. My work hangs in galleries and private collections throughout the world. When I’m not painting, I teach and share my knowledge and experiences with my students at the South Bay Art Department in Hermosa Beach.

Has it been a smooth road?
Working alone in my home studio for many years became increasingly isolating and started to affect my creativity in a negative way. I wanted a space where I could paint and interact with other like-minded people. I eventually found the perfect studio working alongside inspiring, supportive artists This change has brought a renewed energy into my life and has opened me up to new opportunities.

Balancing creativity with business and self-promotion, creative dry spells and the vulnerability that comes with sharing my work are a few other personal challenges I face. When challenges pop up, I just keep moving, constantly pushing myself to grow as a person and artist.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Terri Burris Art story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a freelance fine artist selling abstract paintings that are inspired by nature, music, and a love for graphic and pattern design. Prints of my work are available through Third and Wall Art Group in Seattle, Wa. I also rent my art for real estate staging, film, TV, and commercials.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t follow trends, I just keep painting.
