Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrell Howell, Alex Morel, and Oren Shani.
Gentlemen, please kick things off for us with some background on your story.
Hav-a-cado is an idea born out of the cultural craze that is avocados. The company was created by three friends, Alex, Terrell, and Oren, whose shared knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit has turned our avocado obsession into an actual business. We sell all avocado-based dishes, using a half or whole avocado as the vehicle for delivering gourmet-style street cuisine.
The idea manifested out of our belief that avocado goes with basically everything. What started as an experiment with a bacon-wrapped avocado, filled with a poached egg and shredded cheese, quickly turned into creatively matching the fruit to various flavors and food profiles. We’ve done everything from poke to Cuban-style pulled pork to our acai and fruit salad mixture, which we serve with vegan yogurt and agave nectar. Now, these adventurous ideas have become our art, and we’re continuing to expand the business with out-of-the-box ideas, revolutionizing what we can do with this fruit.
You can find us at local street fairs, farmers markets, festivals, and parties in and around Los Angeles. We hope to take our show on the road one day as a food truck, but for now we’re building a following as a food vendor, spreading our love of avocados through fun and unique dishes and other creative organic, gluten-free, and vegan-based products. We’re excited to keep sharing our ideas, and building a community around a love for good food and good friends.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’re only about a year into this journey, so we’ve obviously been experiencing the slow start of any new business. Right now, we’re at the point where we’re focused on building both a following and capital. Funding is obviously key since we have plans to expand our business in multiple ways, some that go beyond just serving food. We have a concept that catches people’s attention. It’s just a matter of producing it, getting it in front of people, and getting those people to share their experience with their friends. The more fans we have out there vouching for us, the faster this idea will catch on, and we’re looking forward to seeing how far this can go.
Please tell us about Hav●a●cado.
It’s no secret that avocados are a cultural phenomenon right now. More and more food businesses are trying to capitalize on this obsession by making it the centerpiece of one or more dishes on their menu, but hav-a-cado is one of the few to devote its concept solely to this versatile fruit.
Avocados are included in everything we do. Some of our entrees consist of traditional cuisines like ceviche, poke, or Cuban pulled pork, piled on top of a hollowed-out half avocado. We also have more original entrees like the Chutzpah; a falafel wrapped half ‘cado bowl, filled with tabbouleh salad, with a creamy tahina sauce drizzled on top, all from homemade recipes. You can check out our full menu here: www.hav-a-cado.com.
Our focus is being both healthy and filling, which avocados totally fit the bill for. While some of our dishes use “comfort food” ingredients, they are still a healthier alternative to most fried food, and you can always benefit from the essential proteins and fats that avocados provide. We are vegetarian/vegan-friendly and 100% gluten-free.
