Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa de Grosbois.
Teresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
To say I’ve been blessed would be an understatement. But I love the Virgil quote “fortune favours the bold.” Or the more current version that “luck is just opportunity meeting preparedness.” But the biggest part of that is mental preparedness. How does a single Mom with a good government job have the courage to step away from all the security and start a business? For me it started with what I now affectionately call my really bad year. Within a short span, my business had failed, my Father had passed away, my marriage had ended, my health was in a tailspin. The only thing truly clear to me was how incredibly unhappy I was. One night, my life utterly changed. I’m sitting on the bathroom floor of my new (post marriage-breakup) condo. Tools surround me as I’ve always been a renovator and this bathroom is going to be my latest project. And there are tears streaming down my face because all I can think is, “It’s me that needs renovating.” I’m looking back over the past decade of outward success in my life, and I can’t honestly point to a time when I remember being fully lit-up happy. In that moment I decide. I’m going to be my next project. Over the course of the next two years, I started shifting everything, from my health to starting a new business. And my life changed radically. Including starting a charity to build schools in Africa and writing three children’s books to raise money for that charity.
But, after putting all three kid’s books on the bestseller lists, I found dozens of people started asking me for help with doing the same thing with their projects. The thing I found myself most often doing and enjoying was teaching others how to create a movement around their work. So, I rebranded myself overnight and I’ve never looked back. Mass Influence, my latest book, is the natural outcome of that journey. It’s the handbook for those who would create a movement to create positive change in the world. For me, that utter collapse of my life was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Because it forced me to change my mindset about how I create my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I remember when I first decided to leave the security of a six-figure income and follow my dreams. My mother was devastated that I would give up a good pension. Every phone call was me consoling her that everything would be OK. It was a sign of her love. And it didn’t help me succeed. You need friends who believe in you and your dreams to be a contribution to the world. The challenge is that often it’s those closest to you that let their fear get in the way of supporting you. They don’t want you to get hurt or take risk, so they discourage you from putting yourself out there. Your dreams are scarier to you than they are to anyone else. It makes sense. They’re your dreams. That’s huge. Especially if your dream is to really make a difference in the world and move beyond self-indulgent pleasures into Eudaimonia. That’s really huge. But the reality is, there is no one on this earth better hard-wired to live your dreams than you. No one else will be as passionate or as committed. So, stop “just dreaming” and give yourself permission to take action on your dreams. Life is a whole lot sweeter on the other side.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wildfire and Evolutionary Business Council story. Tell us more about the business.
Wildfire Workshops focus is on teaching others how to create a movement around their work. Mass Influence, my bestselling book, is the natural outcome of that journey. It’s the handbook for those who would create a movement to create positive change in the world. The EBC is a community run by Wildfire Workshops. A community of people who are working to teach transformational principles inside their work. Transformational principles are often described as success principles – they’re the body of work that shows us what is possible in our lives if we can change the way we think and live. We include speakers, trainers, radio & TV hosts and documentary makers. And our members work to support and assist one another in creating word of mouth and influence around each other’s work.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
We think of LA as one of the catalysts of world change. There are a lot of global-thinkers here who believe if we can transform the way we think, we can transform the world. Hollywood especially has stepped into the opportunity to be the inspiration for the world. But that starts first at a grass roots level in this city. Because it’s the every-day heroes who are causing shift and change, that make for the inspiration of Hollywood. Beautiful how all that works from the ground up.
