Meet Teju Owoye of Modern Audacity in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teju Owoye.

Teju, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in health care and wellness industries, designing incentive programs for Fortune 500 companies and top universities. I recall feeling slightly “out of place” at my jobs; I was constantly dreaming up new ideas, working on side projects, and trying to push the envelope internally. It wasn’t until I read “The Four Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss and “Escape from Corporate America: A Practical Guide to Creating the Career of Your Dreams” by Pamela Skillings that I realized that maybe the corporate path wasn’t quite for me. After that, I made a plan to quit my job, move across the country, and start my first business—an eCommerce company selling travel accessories and a “shoppable” travel magazine named Tusodo.

After Tusodo, I went on to launch The Sulte Group, a digital marketing agency focused on helping companies grow. I’m passionate about launching products and helping others build brands. Recently, I launched my next business, Modern Audacity (modernaudacity.com), which is a media company aimed at helping women redefine success. I also wrote and created The Audacity Journal (audacityjournal.com), which is a 90-day program designed to help others go after their biggest, boldest goals. I believe that we all have the power to create the life of our dreams, and the journal is designed to give others an actionable plan to manifest their desires.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur can feel a lot like riding a wild bull. Some moments you think that you’ve tamed the bull. Other moments, you’re holding on and just trying not to get bucked off! I have experienced numerous ups and downs throughout my business adventures. For example, my first company ultimately didn’t work out, so I had to move back home with my tail between my legs and start all over again. It was such a humbling experience! But, with every failure, I’ve grown as a person and learned invaluable life lessons.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Modern Audacity is a media platform aimed at helping women redefine success. We’re focused on inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs by providing actionable tips, tools, and resources to help women start businesses. Plus, we speak frankly and candidly about the common trials and tribulations of running a business.

When I was launching Modern Audacity, I heard from a lot of women that they wanted a structured plan to follow to help them stay on track and make progress toward their goals. So, I created “The Audacity Journal,” a 90-day program designed to help others go after exactly what they want—no matter how “crazy” dream may seem. Often, we’re taught to play small or limit our vision to something “realistic.” Personally, I think it’s ridiculous—the world needs you to live up to your potential and contribute your unique gifts! At Modern Audacity, we aren’t afraid to dream big and push others to step outside of their comfort zones. I’m super proud that we are pushing the envelope and helping others unlock their potential.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think LA is an amazing city to be an entrepreneur. It is truly inspiring! There are so many creative, interesting people doing big things that you can’t help but to feel motivated to pursue your passion. I’ve met so many supportive people who have helped me elevate my thinking.

The only drawback is that the cost of living in LA is high. So, when you’re first starting out, it can be tough to work on your idea full-time while trying to fund your lifestyle. While challenging, it can be a great motivator—you really have to hustle in order to make stuff happen.
