Today we’d like to introduce you to Teeya Skipper.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Teeya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as a kid. Just like many singers, I grew up singing in church, school, talent shows… However, I think what really shaped my gift was my writing. As a kid, I always struggled with loneliness and depression. I wanted connection…but I didn’t know how to connect outside of the arts. Journaling always helped me to acknowledge my feelings… I experienced a lot of rejection and just not belonging, so I would write to God about it.
Asking him why he made me. Why was I here? Why wasn’t I special like everyone else? At the time, I didn’t know I had the very thing I thought I was missing… “Value!”
Has it been a smooth road?
Chile!? I don’t even think “smooth” and “creative” fit in the same sentence. ITS NEVER BEEN SMOOTH! The only thing that’s easy for me is self-expression through art, fashion, music, writing, etc…. sometimes I wish it were easier. But truthfully, I wouldn’t be as good at what I do if life didn’t present the tough situations that cultivated it.
My gifts have gone through fires, fog and Brick walls Chile’! And this is why they’re so strong.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Every since undergrad people have called me “Thee Teeya Skipper” and so it has stuck. I am a singer/Entertainer and people know me for having a unique, strong voice and presence. No one sounds like me! That’s what makes me different! No one expresses sound, emotion and energy the way I do. This is why storyteller is a more befitting name for me than “singer”.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do feel like this a good place to work with other professionals to bring about my ideas, however I don’t think it’s a great place to start as an artist! Atlanta is where I first started as a full-time Independent artist and they showed me so much love. They’re still My biggest fan base to date.
What can you do to improve? That’s such a loaded answer because many factors play into that. But what I will say is that creatives must keep building platforms… so that artists starting out have a place to go!
