Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Kelliher.
Ted, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Los Angeles in 2007 with my band at the time to pursue a career as a musician, and what a learning curve that was! Here I am, lucky 13 years later, still on my journey, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Every step of the way is an opportunity to learn more, try harder, and do better. It was actually when COVID hit that I knew I needed to take a bigger leap of faith.
Booking students for drum lessons was the absolute right move. It’s been since May when I hit the ground running, and I’m looking forward to my lessons expanding and aligning with my other musical endeavors.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it had been an easy path, then I’d know I was on the wrong one. Of course, I faced struggles in my own way. Perhaps my biggest struggle was not putting myself first. I used to think that was always selfish, but I learned there is a fine line between being humble and being a people pleaser. So, I’m transitioning from being a yes-man to being a humble man who loves what he does, and it’s been worth it. I have a creative mind, so I might as well create the life I want to have.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Teddy K’s Drum Center – what should we know?
I can help you develop your technique, coordination, grooves, fills, timing, speed, dynamics. . . Am I missing anything? I’m giving online lessons because of social distancing, and I’m ready for one-on-one lessons once businesses open back up. If you’re unsure if you’re ready for lessons, anyone can check out my Instagram page. You’ll find drum challenges on there and a segment called “Ted’s Tips” where you’ll learn useful drum hacks.
I love that I can play and teach! Not all musicians can do both. I’ve been playing for more than 25 years, and I have a Masters Degree in Education. I’m also a fixture in three bands: Angela Petrilli’s band called The Petrilli Players, Fused by Defiance, and Thou Shall Doubt. And I’m endorsed by Soultone Cymbals, Los Cabos Drumsticks, MEE Audio, and Salt Drums.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was raised being told, “You make your own luck,” so I don’t believe luck just happens; you manifest it. Part of doing that is knowing your comfort zone is proportional to your success. The only way to be more successful is to go beyond your comfort zone. I’m willing to do that for myself and help my students do that too.
