Meet Taylor Lockett of TMarie Management in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Lockett.

Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Mid City Los Angeles, California. Early in my youth, I was always exposed to music. I grew up amongst many in the entertainment industry. At my church, I grew up watching Chip Field and Cassie Davis who were the choir directors and would put the church plays together, also Alexis Fields, and others. My first time in a studio was at Jamie Foxx’s house in the 7th grade. I was so mesmerized and I didn’t want to leave. That time in my life was where my passion and love for wanting to work in music and entertainment Truly began.

My entrepreneurial spirit was very much inspired by my mom. I used to always roll with her to the Black Business Expo. I would also hang out and ask to help file paperwork where she worked full-time at Golden State Mutual. Many may not know this but it was the largest African-American owned insurance company in the Western United States and was the first to offer all people life insurance regardless of their race. This inspired me to always work hard and give back to the community early on.

I started managing and developing artists while I was living in Vegas in 2012. At the time, I was doing some promotion, public relations and social media work with an artist named 84fly from Seattle as well as promoting Vegas hip hop shows and rap battles with Radio DJ’s and also appearances for talents such as Just Blaze, Jazzy Jeff and De La Soul at Insert Coins. I was also working at Home Grown Radio doing promo and blogging work for their main platform along with their show The Get Down. On top of that, I was volunteering at Festivals like Rock the Bells and EDC and working really hard to learn and grow within the entertainment business. I was so excited and motivated to follow my heart and achieve my dreams of being an industry mogul. I fell in love with producing events so much that I was inspired to start my first business With Love Productions doing event coordination, curations, and showcases. Some talents that I have had the pleasure of working with on that platform were Antonette Smith, David Sabastian, Scruncho, Lil G, AJ Johnson, Chris Spencer, Smokey Robotic, TJ Gibson, MelloHype, Fat Ron and more.

Keep in mind while doing all of this I was still working full-time. I would get off of work, go home and work on trying to put together a major tour all while attempting to manage three artists and two producers across the world (Very ambitious of me I know). I didn’t know how to put a tour together but I took on the challenge in hopes of adding my artists to the tour for exposure. I did as much research as possible and asked questions. I researched or figured most of everything from getting a hold of agents and managers to how to route and coordinate with venues, I was committed to figuring things out.

I wanted to pursue this career path full time so I took a leap of faith. I left my full-time job, moved back to my hometown of LA starting from scratch. Eventually, I caught the attention of Top “Top Dawg” who then brought me into his label Top Dawg Entertainment(TDE) to be a part of management and admin in 2014. I worked with the majority of the artists on the label. Mostly with Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock on To Pimp a Butterfly and 90059 albums. I also gained a lot of great experience helping to organize, produce the first TDE Christmas Concert and Toy giveaway in Watts. I was able to help with the foundation Top created with the inner-city youth. I’m grateful for him believing in me and giving me the opportunity and platform to utilize my talents. He’s amazing and has a big heart for his community.

After I parted ways with the label, I started my very own creative management company, TMarie Management in 2016. I found my first client and I took a different direction with signing Miryam Lumpini a Tattoo artist. Now known as a World Renowned Tattoo celebrity tattoo artist, That decision has broken some amazing barriers especially within the tattoo industry. Things took off pretty quickly with her and we experienced a lot of success. She’s a very hardworking creative and amazing tattoo artist. Helping her build her business and brand over the years, we got some attention from Forbes, did cool projects with Reebok, American Music Awards more…Even landing a major product deal with BIC.

Other artists I’ve managed over the past four years include Go Dreamer/Pregnant Boy, a producer and writer from Atlanta known for his production work with Outkast. His music was placed on the TV show Silicon Valley and a part of the soundtrack with Mass Appeal. Lavan Wright also a tattoo artist but also is an amazing multifaceted artist from NYC who has done single cover art for Trey Songs, Wiz Khalifa, Trippie Red, 2 Chains and many more. Aside from illustration and tattooing, Lavan is also a muralist having created activations at Rolling Loud and for Revolt TV. Another artist I’ve worked with is Hymn Beats. Hymn is a talented up and coming producer who has placed with artists like Yg, DJ Mustard, Danileigh, Mitch and others. I really look forward to seeing the progression of his continued growth. All of the clients I work with have an unmatched work ethic and really care about the quality of their work which I truly appreciate.

Currently, TMarie Management is rebooting and restructuring. I look forward to making some new major announcements on projects and partnerships soon.

I have also been taking the time to focus more on my own creative passions. I am a student of Hip Hop, painter, writer, poet and producer. I look forward to putting some of my own curated projects out very soon as I’m currently working on my own music.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle and lesson I’ve had to learn has been overworking myself and recovering from it. I am crazy ambitious so I can sometimes take on a lot of projects at once. I’m very passionate about helping others, sharing, and teaching so others can be successful. I’ve learned It’s important that I keep myself balanced mentally, physically and spiritually. Being an entrepreneur and business strategist requires a lot of balance; you don’t have the same safety net as a 9-5 provides. For me, remaining creative as a business-minded person keeps me balanced. I’ve constantly pushed towards growing both my creative and business skills along my journey so I can continue to break the mold of what a typical manager is.

It’s never a smooth road as an entrepreneur. I’m grateful for my peers and mentors as well who have helped to guide me as well and share some insights and advice that has helped me get through.  I am blessed to have overcome so many challenges as they have made me wiser and stronger. I look forward to utilizing all of my lessons to do better and become better. I rely on Prayer and God during those times that have gotten me through. This is not a space for the weak; you must be strong. I didn’t have any money when I came back to LA. I just came on a whim and followed my heart, soul, and passions and was even prepared to sleep on the trains for this. I just packed my bag and didn’t plan on coming back to Vegas.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with TMarie Management – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
TMarie Management is a Creative Management and Consulting Firm. TMM provides a combination of label marketing services with business and brand development and operations. I think what sets my company apart from others is my ability to really tap into the visions fully with clients and quickly help pull together the necessary to support and guide them. I care deeply about my clients so I really take the time to get to know them and help them develop and organize their goals to execute on. Artist Development is very important to me, I fight really hard to do what is necessary for my clients. Nowadays it’s easy for people to say things to distract them and I try to keep my clients in reality as best as possible so the focus isn’t off. You can say I’m kind of like an overprotective mom at times but I keep it super real with them. They may not always like it (lol) but they’ve always told me they appreciate it down the line when they realize how grounded it has kept them.

As a company, I am also proud of letting my artists be artists. With that being said, it’s extremely important for an artist to have their business in order and I enjoy helping them build their business so that they can do more with their artistry. It takes a lot of hard work to do this and it doesn’t come overnight. It takes a lot to focus to execute. Having the right team(s) in place is important and I take pride in helping to find and or sort through key people for certain projects. As a manager, I have to find and work with what’s best for the current goal. It’s important for my client and I to be on the same page. I view them as partners and we have to listen to each other and trust that each of us will do our part. I like to move with purpose and make decisions that are best for my clients and shape new molds for the future of creative management.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to do a lot more! This is only the beginning still for me. I have so many ideas and I’ve been writing and planning for years. I definitely plan to do a lot more in the music and also film space. I have some amazing partners and we are putting together some new projects and deals I can’t speak on just yet. A lot of big changes for sure, my business will and is growing in a very different way than I even expected. I’ve been following my heart and passion over the years and it has led me here. I have to continue to resonate with my heart frequency and where it leads me.

I have to give S/O to my brother and one of my long time partners and collaborators MKBLV Creates. We’ve been working for years and he’s got a lot of dope next level things he’s formulating also. We are both really into community and building platforms for other like entrepreneur minded creatives to have more support to grow. During a time like this, the economy and world is changing so much which affects the industry overall. MKBLV and I are actively looking ahead as to what’s next and what new things we can accomplish for us and others that are sustainable solutions. Currently, we are working up creating cool and fun and high tech solution based projects with up and coming creatives and entrepreneurs all while building platforms and resources for them within our communities. Our goal is to bring more people together in a positive space and spread love and positivity into the world in exciting creative ways.

In the near future, I definitely also plan on touching the fashion and clothing space as well. Since I was able to dress, I’ve loved fashion. I’ve always been super into clothing and kicks super heavy growing up. I’ve always wanted to produce next level fashion shows. Karl Kani, Virgil Abloh and Kanye inspire me a lot and to watch Karl come back and relaunch an iconic piece of culture was super dope. He’s a Legend in my eyes. I’m grateful to have built with him a bit so far and I hope we can collaborate on a larger scale in the near future when the time is right.
